i bought mine at 150kkm and sold at 290kkm all services minus gearbox repair and tyres and shocks came to just over 20k in 5 years of ownership,

i have never been left stranded

the diesels are better in all possible ways except for the noise until its downpiped

mine was weirdly more economical than most. best was 3.9 to cape town and worst was 8

and they have a lot of features standard e39

just remember that they are big cars and parking isn't fun for shopping parkings

I have a manual version of the 528i. The fuel consumption is really amazing. I have had the car since 2005.

I also have an automatic 525i. The manual is version is a real joy to own! Even in traffic, it is much more economical.

I have had problems with the auto box suddenly causing the car to limp and had to recondition auto boxes over the years at great expense. The manual on the other hand has just had clutch kit maintenance and has never had any problems.

And, of course, minor inconveniences - when the battery is giving signs of giving up or lights have been left on unknowingly, the manual just needs a slight kick unlike an auto that's always a hassle to get started!

Anyway, a good, well-kept E39 is one desirable, great car! The 530s are amazing to drive! Good luck!
