Which BMW to buy?

Hi Fanatics,

Looking for a car to replace my sisters 2013 Hyundai i10. The reason for changing is my father recently came across a new crash test report where the i10 did not pass. That and in combination with seeing a couple accidents involving these cars, I and my family simply do not believe my sister should be driving one.

My father and I are very handy with a wrench and will DIY, service and repair almost anything, heck we even tackled doing valve stem seal replacement with the head on, on his E60 525i (N52).

So the question is, what do we look for?

It is restricted to BMW and Mini type cars because I have Rheingold and that makes diagnostics and repair a breeze.

My sister is 20 years old and travels to university every day doing approximately 40km a day. The trip consists of a little bit of traffic but a fair amount of highway driving too. Probably 60/40 highway/town.

She is not a confident or experienced driver yet, so spatial concerns are a factor and thus, a small-ish car would be preferred, however, she is completely competent driving my fathers E60 (Manual) around.

We are expecting to sell the i10 for about 80k and is thus the subsequent budget for the replacement.

So far we have been looking at 116i, 118i, 120i, E46 320i, E46 320D, Mini Cooper R50, was even looking at a Z3 2.8!

My mother owns an R56 Cooper and it is a fantastic car with fantastic fuel consumption (7litres/100km) but ,unfortunately, the R56's seem to be a bit out of the budget.

So, what would you buy?

Don't go mini, they are not the easiest to work on. How do I know, my sus has one Ross Duncan does not want to service her car cause it takes to long. His words to my father was that he can do 5 BMW's in time it takes to do one MINI.

A hatch e87, is what I would suggest. LINK

120d will be best suited for her. It's small, great fuel consumption, very comfortable and easy to diy.

So the i10 is pretty much sold, so the hunt for a replacement has begun. An E46 320i individual would be a great option...

It seems that any e90 320d or 120d for that matter has been absolutely neglected and is the poorest specimen available, in that price range. So I think it would be wise to perhaps look at the E46 platform where 80k can buy something decent...

What report did he read? My sister in law has an I10 , its a bit concerning .. I did a search and they said that the ones made in india scores 0 stars, but then I also read that it scored 4 stars?

Very confusing .

I'll try and find a link to the report. It may have been the non-airbag option i10 1.1 and not the 1.2 with airbags.

I cant believe they're even allowed to sell cars without airbags anymore :nonono:

Good luck with the hunt! Hopefully you find something for her!

She seems to be pretty keen on a Mini (R50), maybe R56 if we're lucky but I'm not too happy with that because guess who has to fix and service the car:smashScreen:

I'd be much happier if she got something with an M52TU or M54 engine because damn those are easy to work on:=):

Found a silver 98 Z3 in beautiful condition with 133 000km's in budget, but she didn't bite:blueCry:

Im going to be looking at selling my wifes Mini Cooper S soon. Its a 2005, R53. Its in decent condition, has a few dings and scratches and needs some TLC on the front suspension (Control Arms/Bushes and top Shock Mounts). I just want to get out of the finance. Will be happy getting R65 000 at min for it.

If interested, send me a PM with your contact number.

Petrol with the E46 320i would be terrible

My buddy runs the same route to varsity everyday that I do, and averages 8.7l/100km on his 320i (6 speed manual)
