Which are the best RFTs?

Hi guys

The time has come again to get new run flats... :thumbdo:

Mine have barely lasted 15 000 km... continentals..

225/45/17 and 255/40/17's.

My question is,

  • what mileage do you guys get on yours?
  • and which are the "best" runflats to take for price/value?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

How is the conversion away from the runflats?

Cheers

That is the best option. Get a spare/emergency wheel kit with a jack and a wheel spanner.

WOW....only 15000km on a set of Conti's ?

do you have a "heavy" right foot ?...I would have expected at least 30000km's

I cannot really give you any advice on which of the other brands to go for, maybe time for some research, into which brands use a "harder-compound" and thus better life-span....my second hand knowledge would have put Michellins as a softer compound thus short lifespan, but I might be wrong.

As for the conversion to NON-Run-flats....no issue, except no reserve means when you get a flat, you are stuck, ....so either get "marie-biscuit" spare and jack etc, or a full sized spare with jack etc, in both cases you are going to sacrifice your boot space for carrying around a spare.

Well... I can say that Michelins have been the best to me thus far, they lasted me 50,000Km on my last E90 (17s) gripped like crazy and had no excessive road noise and they were really priced well.

Now I have goodyears on which came with my F30 (18s) and besides being noisy and causing side wall bubbles like crazy they actually last.. Front are currently on the back and are original and on 53,000Km at the moment. New Fronts are Conti Sport Contact 5 (done 12,000 odd KM on them and still look like new) replaced due to 2 of them popping sidewall bubbles..

If you are a racer and need all the grip go the non RFT route that is your best bet for grip. For everyday use I think RFTs are they way to go unless they last you 15,000Km? :fencelook:

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback.

Let me just add some more detail to it, which I forgot to add.

I bought the baby with new back tyres, but used front tyres.

Now, the front tyres are getting worn on the side, maybe heavy cornering as I drive a 15km country road to work - which is quite fun.

When I went to TWT the guy said my rears need to be replaced as well, even though they did look in good shape to me.

If I can get 35 000 km and + I am a happy camper :=):

So far the garages around me only have Bridgestone and Conti's, but I'll still look around.

Thanks so much again for the interesting feedback.

I got Potenza S001's by default, already had a sidewall bubble burst,
Dont like these tires at all, in The dry its half decent, but in the rain, its suicide giving the M-Lite some throttle.

Want to go Non-RFT route badly, but boot space issues is my only deterant .

Went the non-rft route with my X3... even there the spare tyre took up so much space :nonono:

What is everyone's opinion on Pirelli rft?

I have the RE050's and they really aren't bad tyres. My next tyres will DEFINITELY be NON-RFT though. Great tyres but the stiffness does impede on the ride quality as well as the handling of the car due to the additional stiffness in the tyres.

best run flats are no run flats :fencelook:

I'm with genius, best thing I ever did for my car, and NO you don't get crap from BMW, car been for 2 services and a pulley replacement. Of and get a apace saver kit.

iv just clocked 50 000km with my Michelin's and still some meat left for a few more KM's.

I think TWT are trying to con you into paying for extra tyres which are not needed .

made the mistake of buying some 1 series wheels with run flats on... drove on them for a week then put the old wheels and tires back on car rides so smooth now...

contemplating binning the RFT but it seems like a waste... I will put them back on some time and see if I can 'fix' them by running lower pressures... cant wait to finish the RFT they heavy and ride like rubbish grip seems ok...
