roughly the same, only starts around 8000km,then i keep it toped up,but apperentally this is normal on these cars

its my first car ive ever driven that use oil,not even the navara uses oil.

clutch started to make a noise last weekend ,so going in for new clutch next week, also the passenger window is makeing noises going up and down, they say they are going to replace the tracks and motor

Yep, in the beginning I was freaking out that my car was using oil, especially at as low a mileage 46k km. But soon read that this is a very common and normal issue with these engines. The fact that it seems to be getting better tells me that the engine is simply settling in nicely now. Our Isuzu bakkie was using a very small amount of oil when it was sitting around the 20k km mark, now almost 20k km later not using a drop.

What sort of noise is your car's clutch making? Is it a type or rattle while accelerating or changing gears? Mine has been doing this too for a while, only now starting to get more and more noticeable/annoying. Took a similar car as mine in terms of age, but with more than double the mileage (134k km) for a test drive yesterday and the clutch was pretty noisy - well, assuming it's the clutch, could very well be something loose in the exhaust system.

when i first bought the bm,it used 1litre every 800km to 1000km.
phoned bmw and asked if this was right, they said no and asked me to bring the car in,they had it for 3 days and replaced a valve or something, but in the process,to protect the motor it blows the tappet cover gasket, thus the high oil consumption.

i actually wanted to return the car and get my money back, but they calmed me down and gave me a e60 520d for the 3 days.
to me this wasnt normal as i have never owned a car that used oil,and when i bought the bm,didnt expect it to be like this.

but according to bm,the e90 does use a little oil over time,so far between 8000km and 10000km ,put in between a quater and half a litre.

our 89 citi golf never used oil between services.and that had over 250 000km on the clock, and i was always putting it in the red line(was trying to blow the motor to put in a 16v one,but the damn thing wouldnt blow)the car was sold to my wifes sister, for her 3 children to use(and abuse)over 500 000km on the clock and still going strong, still doesnt use oil.
pity they didnt look after it,was chrashed, had 3 or 4 rooibok loaded in it,was driven over dirt roads at high speeds, etc.
the 15 inch momo racer mags, were destroyed and the original suspencion put back in.

hate to see how it turned out, especially after collecting trophys for show and shine comps.

I think the problem is that apart from normal oil consumption, these engines do have some common areas where oil can leak out. Of course, 1 ltr per 1000km is considered within spec for most if not all manufacturers these days - crazy! Apparently the 320i engines were especially bad at oil usage!

it seems the more technology ,the more oil it needs:rollsmile:

i had a 1974 beetle, and the joke that did the rounds were,if it didnt leak oil, then it didnt have oil in the motor:rollsmile:.

strange,i rebuilt the motor after i bought it and it never used oil or leaked oil.the fun thing about it was that to remove the motor was three wires, accelerator cabel, and four bolts.with the car jacked up and a old tyre, pull and out it came.what a pleasure.

todays modern cars?how many wires?takes nearly half a day to remove all the plastic covers:rollsmile:.

oh well

Well, same with my old Corolla, never used a drop of oil, and at that stage was using Magnatec.

Yep, same with some of the older Porsches, easier to take the engine out and service it than leave it in the car!!

Modern engines have a myriad of sensors and all sorts of other electronic bits adding to the complexity, and then hidden under loads of engine covers. Also, tightly squeezed in, so getting to certain areas requires stripping a lot away to have proper access.

and then they say mankind is going forward:biglol:

it seems we like to make things more complicated instead of simpilar:rollsmile:

take a old cars manual and it tells you how to service the car, todays car, please contact your nearest dealer, even if you have to change a simple fuse, take to your nearest dealer:biglol:

Well, the average motorist these days has far less overall car knowledge than say 20 years ago, and even simply things like changing a wheel is too much of a challenge for them, let alone something more complicated under the bonnet. But, unless you have a full workshop with diagnostics, you are pretty much stuck on the side of the road with most modern cars - and this is most problematic with newer off-road vehicles! Way too complicated to be easily worked on or patched up in the middle of nowhere!

i have to aggree there philip.and really its a shame.
i remember my dad teaching me the basics on the motor, now what do i teach my son,by the time youve got all the plastics off,he is so bored and has dissapeared to go play ps2 or something:rollsmile:

and lets look at it from another angle,if we cant work on them then can the technician really work on them?do they just replace parts untill its quite and running again,or do they do problem solving?.

and does a diagnostic machine really give out the correct details of a bearing that is on it way out,or if the fly wheel is damaged.

some things are just better done with a visual inspection

Yes, it is like your average IT "technician" (since cars are getting more and more like computers).

He would just say "format your hard drive", "re-install windows", "replace the motherboard" without actually knowing what is wrong.

Scary, if the BMW technicians are doing the same.
