Yoginnaidoo, I will try and take pics over the weekend, but have to agree with msm that my X5 looks the same as any other X5. Maybe we should ask some X5 owners to join in an outing of some sort to then try and get a few X5's together.

What does Calypso mean by saying all the X5's are in the workshop for gearbox repairs. I bought my 2005 Graphite Grey E53 3.0d Auto Sport in May 2009 with 94 000km. Is there something I should now about common problems with the gearbox and other stuff???

One in the family had the gearbox crap out because an AUX fan failed.
Cost R35000 to repair, but its not uncommen for bmw autoboxes to die.

My cousin "kinked" a rim on his X5, with a sport pack, on one of our social gatherings (read: drunken outings). Cost him (or insurance I think) more than R10k to sort it out. Lousy thing was that he dropped about that much in Monte Casino that night :hammerhead:

Also, family X5 also 3.0d 2005 model. At around 120 000 km, gearbox started giving problems. Would be very jerky, as if a car bumped into you when you pull off. The gearbox would then go into "transmission failure" and would only pull off in 3rd. Same thing happened with another X5 in the family. They quoted R35k to fix. We changed the gearbox oil twice and seems much better, but not great.

So if it hasn't started, try sell it and get a newer X5 with lower mileage!

OK, so i've just bought my brothers 2003 X5 diesel and he had the gearbox repaired at 129k when it died. Cost was about R28k of which BMW paid R12 447. Car is on 210k now. I am convinced gearbox gave up the ghost because of what he used to tow. A big heavy trailer with two quads, overhead boxes, etc. which must have weighed about 1,2 tons, if not more. He would often fetch steel plates on his trailer, also weighing about 1,2 tons.
Had to replace a rear sideshaft recently. Also had the steering rack reconditioned a while back. Car is still as solid as a rock though, and drives even better than my E39 530d, with similar milage. So far very happy with my purchase.
