when should you rebuild a badly wrecked 3 series

So last year in December, I saw this car at one of the Durban scrap yards , mandoes if I remember correctly , It was a black e46 320i manual with really really bad front side and offset damage to it . Reason it caught my eye was because it had a BMW fanatics.co.za sticker on the back window. At the time I wondered if it was one of the guys here on the forum , meant to post and ask but forgot about it and the only picture I took was forgotten.

The car was a complete wreak the impact looked so bad that there seemed to be a wrinkle on the roof and through one side , from front to the back tail light, The car looked bent to me and the front end looked like it was sitting on the floor , There was no way a car like this would been rebuilt i thought, to me was to far gone. And I had asked if they were stripping it and they said "its still in clearing but most probably they would , its to bad"

This afternoon , to my surprise, I see the car again, at another yard being rebuilt , I was shocked . Could not believe it was the same car , I took a closer look and it was . Why would someone in their right mind want to repair a car like that? Wouldn't it be more economical to buy another then repair a car like this?

I know that this was an insurance write off ,and the old owner was probably paid out for it, The car has no sentimental value to the new owner and person rebuilding it , as his the security guard for the new scrap yard that its at, so I cant understand why one would do such a thing or how a car like this could still be allowed on our roads.
His made much progress on it as well! Poor workman ship but its taking shape again.

At what degree of damage does the law state a car can not be rebuilt but must be scrapped?

Only picture I took

nothing to subscribe to..., the OP isnt rebuilding the car but questioning whether written off cars should be rebuilt and resold.

i think people should rebuild cars within reason..
if the car is being sold..the person buying needs to be aware of what was done..saying that though you know how it is out there..
if its for yourself you could buy & repair a really cool car for a fraction of the cost & still have a safe vehicle..
vehicles are written off so easily nowadays..pop an airbag on an e46 & its written off lol…i paid R18k for a 330i that everyone said i should rebuild but i swopped the engine & box into a good e46 with no engine & box. So to me it all depends..damaged chassis i wouldn't mess with (straightening & welding)
even roof damage & stuff I'm not keen..but a bonnet & a fender or even an airbag & i don't see a problem with it.

This is the comment I got from the insurance about the car, so I guess it can be rebuilt regarding laws. @Chef I posted about this accident last year sometime My wife was involved in a head on collision.

My sister in law works at a place that auctions off code 2 vehicles. You would not believe the amount of business they do. There is a HUGE market in SA for wrecks, even ones as bad as this. Dudes buy them and rebuild them. It is perfectly legal, the only caveat being that insurance companies will not insure them.

Hi Guys !

Thanks for fixing the title also! Really appreciate it. Did this post way to early in the morning , not sure where my mind was.

Sorry for the late reply,

@ Captain_Stealth , LoL nooo I wouldn't rebuild an accident damaged car ..not with this much damage. Restore an Old car yes :)

Yeah! When I saw the car at mandoes it was really bad , there were dents and smashed panels all along the sides , no front wheels etc , it looked bent and was lying on the floor .

@Jamaine The car , believe it or not is at Sparesboys now! Its parked at the side behind the big gate, I don't think they are doing the rebuild but merely helping the guy out by letting him park the car there and work on it in the evenings, I was told it belongs to the security guard there whos rebuilding it bit by bit. The car needs a proper respray , looks like they sprayed it with a can of cheap spray paint. But the front end seems to be coming along .

It was really shiny when I first saw it! Thats why it caught my eye, I thought to myself , this looked like it was once a really nice clean car. I really cant believe its bieng rebuilt . Iv seen cars with much less damage being stripped.

Surly the cost of repair on this car is more then the cost of purchasing a good second hand car with no damage .

Thanks for the Info. I also cannot believe its being rebuilt! when I did a costing to buy and rebuild I was looking at around 70k that was with cheap stuff and cheap labour still not worth the effort cause the car will never be the same but obviously this looks like a charity case and I hope the security guard is happy although it will be really difficult to get road worthy there was too much damage to suspension and chassis. I miss that car and I will pop by to see it thanks Zippy320.

Imo.
Provided a vehicle is code 2.
A vehicle that has only cosmetic damages. Ie. Bumpers, doors, fender could be considered for repair
If there's structural damage.
Ie. Chassis bent, fire wall or any kinetic part displaced. One should not consider repairing.
On a side not people make a living off repairing written off vehicles. And they make alot of money reselling these cars to thier not so clued up customers.
I've seen code 2 vehicles worse off than code 3 vehicles.
