Wheel alignment ?

Guys I please need your help on this one, I have used HiQ and Supa Quick in the past for my cars wheel alignment. My last set of tyres ran down on the inside of the tyres.

I spoke to the guys at BMW and was told that they can fix the problem and that HiQ and others will not be able to help me as they have different specs to that of HiQ as to te setting of wheel alignment.

BMW Wheel alignment = R1200
HiQ = R280

Now my question, is BMW trying to make money out of me by stating this, or is there truth in what they say.
My feeling is that BMW is full of BS, What is your opinion ?

Beast, the machines that Hi-Q uses is more acurate than bmw's.
the only difference is that bmw does the allignment using weight bags to put inside the car,
and Hi-Q doesn't. The other thing is that bmw has a 5 pin system (small holes on the rim between the bolts),
that drops into these holes to accordding to them, does a better allignment. :nono:
Now I have aftermarket M3 rims, so no holes, so even on motorplan they send me to Hi-Q in Hatfield.
That's where the dude explained to me about the weigh-down issue. :thumb:
What you do is call up Leo Haese in Hatfoeld, 0123663000, ask to speak the man that does the allignment,
get him to give you those weights per seat, and then make up your own bags with sandbags, :thumbsup:
then go to Hi-Q, and your set, that's how I did it and my car's tyres still look brand new after a year.

Autoquip tygervallei here in the cape has been my place of choice for year now. When i got my bmw I did not knew about the weight bags needed but they did. Other thing that I like about them is when they put back your wheels they put copperslip on bolts and use a torque wrench to tighten the them. It is the small things that count for me.

Before we get to wheel alignment, what were the tyres that wore badly? If they're the same tyres as previously used then it is probably alignment.

What the guy from BMW is saying is correct. The two systems and specs are different. From what I remember I wanted to get my wheel alignment done at BMW, but they said something about a damaged rim and couldn't do it. Thats another story.

From what I remember reading, they use weights in order to accurately change the alignment due to load changes - so things like body roll due to cornering.

I have been using tiger wheel and tyre for the last 50 000kms. I think they measure your wheel alignment relative to your chassis and the other wheels. Don't know exactly how, but that's the idea anyway.

Since I've changed to TW&T (admitedly the acronym isn't great...) I've noticed the steering feels very neutral and haven't had any issues. I have also noticed that the car doesn't seem as stable at higher speeds. :mmm: What BMW tends to do is run more toe in on all wheels than TW&T. Which means less tyre life but the grip is better.

All of this being said, I want to change the settings slightly for more toe in...
