What's with the "owned by an old lady" routine?

Went looking at cars this morning as I had some time on my hands.

Three times in a row I was told "Oh it was owned by an old lady"

Wat se kak is die?

I live in a street of old ladys and my 81Yo Ma is still around, every single day I watch them burning clutches, bashing gates, getting stuck on rocks, driving up the road foot flat with steam pouring out the bonnet, crunching gears, labouring engines, watering lawns with sprinklers next to cars with windows wide open, flooring ice cold engines and generally doing a sterling job of fsking up their once nice cars.

I will NEVER EVER buy a car even if an old lady drove it just once.

I know. I can only but laugh.

A few years ago I sold my little brothers POLO Playa 1.4 on Gumtree. Car was literally sold in 10 minutes flat from putting the ad up.

Next day the car is on gumtree again, for 10k more than I sold it for. This time it had a "Carefull Lady Owner".

Kak man!! My brother drove the living crap out of that car.

:spit::spit::spit::spit: Damn Rick that was a good laugh!
I wonder how the seller would react if you highlight the abuse caused by the 'little old lady'?

This is my opinion as well when someone tells you the car was only driven by an old lady, apart from the way that old ladies drive cars, as mentioned by rick it is probably all lies and if they feel the need to lie to sell a car, what is wrong with it or what else are they also lieing about?

LOL, mine was owned by an 'older' lady! :dropjaw:

But I can see that it was very well looked after and mechanically carefully treated, so wish me luck! :)

Mine was owned by a well educated, upper middle class, 55 year old, company owner who pulled it through his ass.

Just goes to show. You can have everything going for you, if you don't care about cars, you just don't care about cars.

Geez! Half the ads on the gum have "Lady owner" or "lady driven" in them. WTF lady drives a zoopedup Ford Fiesta with 17inch mags, huge wrap-around fibre glass spoilers, racing seats, and extra gauges???

I once bought an e30 325i auto privately and directly from a really old lady.
The car was in a very good condition, however it only lasted 2 weeks under my heavy foot.
The box simply wasn’t used to that treatment. Not that i abused it. Simply driving it fast.
I mean, what harm can you do when standing on the loud pedal when the selector is in "D". Or so i thought:banghead:

What about "car was used 4 long travel only". Does this person stay on the N1 and never visit malls etc.

At the end of the day it's just words used to lure the potential buyer - it's the car that tells the proper story, and if you know what to look for it should be fairly easy to make an educated decision to buy or not.

Fairly true, although The POFS is, without a doubt, the exception to the rule here.
Oh and by the way... POFS was indeed owned by a lady. Go figure.:banghead:

my story is rather Ironic

my Car was in showroom condition when i bought it, mint interior, engine just run in Full service history at BMW and it being a 2 door i can see the previous owner did not have passengers at all no wear on passenger seat or B-pillars. and its auto so engine rarely saw the red line.

heres the crux of the matter the dealership never told me any of the above mentioned stories Lady Driver etc. and here I got the textbook lady driver car, I actually found out i had a lady driver by the car records, previously owned by a certain mrs.Swanepool lol and judging by the mileage and service history Mrs.Swanepool did not enjoy driving or spending time in the car.

Well, the long distance km cars are actually worthy of looking at.

A car that did 100,000 km in two years means it was driven by a rep, meaning long distance KM's. Thats where the service interval comes into play, a car that has been fully serviced every 3/4 months due to high KM is worth having a look at. its not highway traffic that kills a car, its stop start.

Cars that only drive 5km one way each day never get the oppertunity for the oil to get warm properly, and those motors fail very early.

I bought my wife an 06 model in late 08 with 120,000 on the clock. I however knew the car history from new as it belonged to one of our reps, and I tell you that was a spectacularly good buy...

But ya... do not trust the tree....

I bought my 320d from a dealership. Now my car was also owned by (you guessed it...) a lady and she use to (wait, it gets better) only drive long distance with it. And no, the dealership didn't tell me all this, I ran the numbers of the car through some sources and found that I actually knew the registered previous owner.

He resides WAY up in the Northern Cape and bought the car and for wife, and the wife, for reasons unknown to me, stayed down in George.
This info corresponded, cause all the services were done in George and some old fuel slips I found in the car also confirmed this. (I did a nice fuel consumption check on the slips and it looked pretty good too.)

The owner told me how nice the car was and looked after, but when I asked him about two ugly scratches and three dents, he was in shock cause that were not any of their doing. Turned out the dealer used the car whilst in between buying and selling and ended up pulling it decently through the gat in about two weeks time.

I confronted the dealership with my newfound wisdom and I got a complimentary bonnet and bumper respray, 3 tanks of fuel (In the time where diesel cost R10/liter) and an extra service OUT of motorplan.

So I scored a bit in the end. :)

I like buying cars where the previous owner has left all the receipts in the cubby for all the parts and service he did that maxed his credit card. At least you know it was loved and cared for.

My 328i the previous owner had owned for 14 months I found the receipts and in that time he spent R38000 in service and fixing stuff up.

That car was in good nick by the time I got it.

Rick...Yip know what you mean. My brother in law just bought an e30 325is from....a " very elderly gentlemen" directly; but this time the myth is true. The car is in mint condition. Driven by him alone over the years...full service record and slips... He was rather sad to let go of the car... So sometimes you do get the lucky buy...

So... I bought this nice "one lady driver, mileage high, only because of long trips" car once.... it just had everything have a life and rattle of its own in the car. I found the story about the one lady was correct, as I found her details in the owners manual with cell number and all.

You guess right, so I phoned her... damn sexy voice and sounds nice and proffesional, turns out to be that she sold this car for a 4X4 bakkie as she was using the Audi every day to visit farmers as a rep for pestecides and just could not hold the audi together anymore on the K*k roads she was travelling every flippen day... So 60 000km's of long dirtroad "sinkplaat" on the clock is totally something else than open tarmac.

Then... maybe in 10years all roads will be "sinkplaat" anyway?

I was looking at getting an ST ( yes i said it an ST ) before my 3 series
It was a 2008 100k UNDER the normal price loverly blue with go faster stripe and yip ONE CAREFUL LADY OWNER so i did a little research and found the car to be A CODE 3:dropjaw: :cursin: and they put in a new engine :thinker: :nono:

I drive a car hard push it to its limits just they way i have been taught ( saps body guarding security ect) i almost valet it every 3 days NO BODY :nono: :slap: but me drives it even when putting it on ramps and sh1t at the machs, and i tell people when i sell it BUT it also has ALL ITS SLIPS IN THE CUBBY, why oh way cant people be honest, sorry this thred has touched a sore spot, You work your butt off to save for a dream car and turns out to be a ship wreck :censored: :banghead:
