What's the best way forward? (330d)

Good morning all

I hope to get some advice from you guy's. Must i repair or replace!

My old trusty remapped 330d bite back yesterday.(184000 km, 2004)

As i pulled away from my house, i heard a funny noise and opened my window, just to hear it's my car's engine making these noises. On idle there was no noise but on about 1500 RPM i could hear all is not well. Get her back to my house, was about 100m, and into my garage on idle.

Was scared to restart, but opened the hood and restart. Was normal and as i increased the RPM to just above idle, the noise was back and it sounded as if it was comming from the head. Sounded like a bearing knock. If i open the oil filler cap, the sound is much louder and you can hear it on idle.

Where and how do i start? Suppose i have to remove the tappet cover to see what's cooking.

Want to share the following as well. It was if the car was smoking more on start-up the last few weeks, 3 or 4 times the engine was like it was not on all 6 cilinders when i start. This is just for a second or so, not more. If someone else would have start her up, they would not even notice this. For the last 3 months i only use the car on weekends. Using Helix Ultra every 7500km with filter change the same time.

The worst thing of all is that i am here in the bushes with no decent mechanic to help me out.

What a way to start my new week!

All info welcome!!!

Barkie.

I hope that it is something small. The noise however does sound very serious. Will see if i can get any more clues tonight.

could be vales stem seals for smoke... or check the tappets/lifters? my car did that a while ago and it wasnt due for service, but i did an oil service anyways and it worked... no noise and no smoke... try an oil change? use the castrol SLX about R65/L from stealers.

dammmm Im guesing - but I think it might just be the stem seals are leaking back - is there anyways you can get somone to do a compression test.
It will get louder as you increase the revs as there is more back pressure.
I hope thats all.

Will see what i can do. I am just a bit scared to run the engine? Not sure if i do more harm than good!

Hmm, difficult to say and not familiar with the 330d - as mentioned above though, the crank vibration dampener may have failed which causes all kinds of horrible noise and prevents the belt driven ancillaries from working properly.

I don't know, reading this again, the using oil and missing on start-up is troubling.

Hope you get it diagnosed and fixed!!

@ Netercol, no, i was thinking of that as well. Will the sound level of the noise also increase when i open the oil filler cap? The only way is to remove the tappet cover and the inlet manifold , just a bit tied up at the shop at the moment and no one here to assist me. Hope it is not to big of a problem!

just a thought here, have you removed the flaps? else the engine might have swallowed a flap..

actually now that you mention it. Seeing its a E46 it could just be the flaps which is very common failure.

@Andy1GP, Clutcy and Jarred in EL redone my engine. I asked them to go 1st oversize with new pistons, done bearings, head the lot. Engine is running very nice and the power at the wheels is 147kw with 426 nm. very strong and I am glad we did not just done the damaged cilinders. It was a lot of money but I enjoy this car a lot. Nice power and only sipping the fuel.
