this is obviously the easiest decision in the world.

buy a 2nd hand 250, learn to ride properly, sell it a few months down the line for a similar price as you bought it for and then purchase the type of bike that will suit your riding style/requirements

this whole 600's are easy to ride logic is bullshit. an m3 without traction control is easy to drive, but no sane responsible person would throw a new learner in there and say enjoy.

My first bike is a Gsx-R 750... Bought it 3 Months back and taught myself to ride "not really a smart thing but hey" I use it to get to work. Edenvale to Pretoria east. I find it rather fun and powerful enough.

Best advice is get something you comfortable with as a start bike and make sure you have safety gear. If you go for a faster bike like the 600 + then take it very easy. Dont rush it

just my 2c

Been looking at a bike since March, almost got a GSX-R 600 but they sold it before I could put in an offer.

I had the same dilemma when speaking to my biker friends and they all said I should go for nothing less then a 600cc, reason being ; as the other forum members stated I will get bored in a few months time with a smaller bike and a 600cc + will scare some sense and respect right into me from the get go.

they reasoned if I get a 250cc ill be so used to ringing the bikes neck when I get on a bigger super bike those bad habits will get me into trouble.

Rode my friends k8 gsx-r 750 and that was fun and scary all at the same time :)

Currently got my eye on a Blue and white '08 R6 just a few more weeks of saving.
its all up to you though and your mind state, if you get a big bike you know you should take it easy and get used to it.

Howzit dude , from my experience , If you going get a new 600 , get a truimph 675 , a zx6r or a CBR 600rr , much easier to ride and less demanding than the R6.

I agree with what RR Booi said..last month only I got CBR 600rr..It's an amazing bike..Very smooth to drive, gives great average and also it looks stylish and cool..
Here's a pic of my new CBR 600rr:

My opinion on this .... If u CANT ride Dont go allout on CBR600RR or R6 right now...rather go smaller (NC30 excellent Bike, easy too handle and not sluggish at all. Had mine 2 years with some go fast parts...and she keeps up with the big boys) and get to know ur driving style...pick up some experience. If u come down on that superbike, trust me bud u gonna cum down hard and its gonna cost u much more...

Oh after owning my NC30 for 2 years Im only starting to think of an upgrade now...my height and build and the bike calling my name it will be 600RR same colour as mahlonritt's.

I was in the same boat in 2006, trying to decide which bike to buy. Heres what you need to do:

1.) 250 or 600? most 250's are 2 stroke, meaning they use petrol and oil, i had a yamaha tzr250 and didnt like the fact i had to throw oil into the thing every 2 weeks, i actually wished i had a 400 to eleviate this prob. I have a suzuki 600 now, and its a awesome machine, you can easily start on this bike, just take it slow at the beginning.

2.) R6, Kawi, Suzuki, BMW? Remember each bike has its own characteristics, like sitting angle, ability to move in the seat if you need to lean if going slightly fast in a corner. The suzuki is the most comfortable and has loads of room for movement. I rode a R6 once and the sitting angle was too steep for me. NB: sit on as many bikes as you can and then decide.

If you specifically want to improve track riding, then start small, maybe 400cc. Oh yes do you know that the 2006 and up suzuki 1000 has a switch with 3 settings, perfect for beginners, 1st setting will give 600 power, then 2nd setting 750 power, then 3rd setting 1000 power.

Go small buddy , had a friend that started at 400cc if I remember correctly and rather not. The falls are bad , even if its a knock to your budget go with the 250cc first . It will teach you the basics .

Dude, 90% of ppl that responded advised him not to buy a 250cc, now you come along and tell him to buy one. Hav you even owned one? I had one and only fell once, caused by the inferior braking that a 250cc has.

Ok, i didnt want to do this, but here are the negatives of a 250cc.
1.) Every1 with a 400cc cud probably beat you.
2.) Your confidence will be affected by this.
3.) Its not as cool as having a 400cc or 600cc, wen riding with other bikers.
4.) You are only as good as the machine you riding.
5.) Its too light to practise wheelies, if u ever decide to try it :=):
6.) Guys on 250cc, dont feel right at a trackday, if u decide to try it.
7.) It doesnt sound cool, unless you riding above 120km/h
8.) Your friends mite call it a lawnmower.
9.) Brakes are not as good as a 400cc.
10.) Its a 250cc

I think my job is done. Goodluck buddy.

I decided to buy a bike in Jan this year. I did a ton of research to see what would be the best bike for me AT THAT TIME. Although my heart ached for a CBR1000 or B-King, logic told me that I had to buy the proper bike to start off with.

I shopped around untill I found this :

DSCF0357.jpg

It's a Kawasaki ER-6n. 650cc and handles like a dream. Tuned for toque rather than flat out rpm power, this bike was amazing to start riding on.

Decent acceleration, top speed of around 180km/h, although on a naked bike as small as this one, 180km/h isn't a lot of fun, which in a way, is a good thing. It helps you to learn to keep yourself in check.

I bought it secondhand with 6500km on the clock for R32,000.00 and sold it 3 months later for R48,000.00. I didn't buy a bike again because I got married in September and the profit came in handy

What I'm trying to say is : Forget about what you want, and get what you need. Take the long way to the end of the road, otherwise you just might not make it. And with anything in life, you can make, or lose money. Shop around, and you might just get the perfect deal. Times are tough right now, and there's a lot of guys out there looking to get rid of their toys at bargain prices.

Good luck, and always be open to advice from the experienced guys. Good gear goes a long way to make you feel safe on the bike. Good training goes a long way to give you confidence when that shakey moment comes (and it will come!). But good COMMON SENSE will be the best thing you can have when you get on the bike.

Hope this helps....

1.) not true, something like a tzr250 3xv will keep up easily with say a suzuki gk73/6
2.) if the "mine is bigger than yours" gets to you
3.) no comment
4.) bs, an experienced guy with wipe the floor riding a 250 stroke against a novice on a 1000
5.) you can clutch wheelie any bike :)
6.) again, this is BS, 250 2 strokes are awesome track bikes
7.) twostrokes sounds awesome
8.) maybe if it was an RZ50
9.) the brakes are more capable than a novice rider, they are more than enough, learn to brake.
10.) its a 400cc

there are 2 real reasons not to buy any 250cc 2T or 400cc, and this is cause they are kak unreliable, and parts are scarce and expensive

riding more bike than you can handle is stupid...

if your ego is so fragile that you cant ride a smaller bike you probably should not be riding anyway because you will get into trouble...

Im sure we would all have loved to learn to drive in an M3 or a 330i, but in reality its not a good idea... with a bike there is way more to learn than in a car so to me learning on a biggish bike is just retarded...
