Hey Peeps.

What would you do?

X5 M50d, less than 6 months old, at 3 months it went back to BMW for electronics fault, all safety features disables after a few km of driving now both low pressure the smaller turbos need to be replaced. Motor to be removed from the car for this job, Give me your opinion or feeling on this. Me personally feel this car is a Lemon and is going to give me endless troubles if it starts out like this.

If you feel this way about the car already, that feeling is never going to go away. It will never bring you joy. Have it repaired, sell it/trade it in.

I had a Cayman S that had issues after 2 months (granted, it was a used car, not new). Gearbox, side shaft, delamination on headlights, peeling door rubber, etc.
Since it was all covered under maintenance plan, I kept the car a bit longer afterwards before selling it for other reasons.

My advice is to keep the car and get BMW to fix everything.

If it is out of Plan, or close to being out of Plan, then sell it.

It’s 6 months old, meaning that you have 54 months of full maintenance plan. You also have a guaranteed courtesy vehicle for the first 3 years (IIRC), if the car has to spend any length of time in the shop.

Unless you can return it with no financial downside, any other option than getting BMW to fix it properly doesn’t make sense.

Agreed with the above.

Knowing the skill levels at dealerships, there is probably nothing wrong with the turbos...

But yeah, I would recommend you get the issues fixed and live with it, the financial hit on a 3 month trade in doesnt bear thinking about

this is my worry, they need to remove the motor form a basically brand new car. What is not going to work from here on? BMW SA are useless at even replying to any communication I have sent them

Let me tell you one thing about the guaranteed courtesy vehicle. They will not give you a courtesy vehicle if your car is not towed to the dealership. First hand experience with this just now. Had to fight tooth and nail as I was in the Cape for work and had to travel back to Jozi on Saturday. Dealership told me to bring the car to them which on the advice of dealership I did. With that they will not give you one it must be towed in. Eventually Friday at 16:45 they agreed to get me a Vehicle, you then only have use of said vehicle for 5 days. WTF. Any ways long story I am back in Jozi my car still in Somerset West BMW. Lets see what this story brings.

I am just p!ssed that I need to follow up with them all the time. They just dont get back to anyone. Only reason I think I eventually got the "Mobility Vehicle" as they call it was because I sent BMW SA an email with the vin number and asked them where i can return the spare key as I have lost faith in this car and dont want it back they need to come up with a solution.

To add they would assist by trading it in and I buy a new car where they assist with lower interest rates and what ever. That aint happening as we bought it cash so no help there.

Good morning

My first suggestion is that you find the best dealer in your area. Then stick with them and build a good relationship with the workshop manager.

On such an expensive vehicle, be fussy and make sure they fix the vehicle 100% to your expectation.

I hope after this fix you will be able to enjoy your awesome machine!

All the best.

Hi Swiegie

my issue is it have not even had a chance to have it serviced yet and its in Somerset West. The sales lady who sold it to me I have on speed Dial from Fourways where we bought it from and she is awesome and really trying to assist where possible,

Had similar experiences in 2007 when I bought my 335i, fuel pump failure after 3 months etc. Stuck it out and BMW sorted teething issues and I WILL NOT part with this Carl after 17 years!
Hang in there as the solid engineering will come through and give you a chance to really enjoy this beast

I think based on this crap experience thus far, maybe consider the legal route and find a way to return it for a full refund or as close to that as possible. They will probably want to deduct something for the use of the vehicle for the 6 months even though this is not your fault.

I have to reevaluate my advice..
I had a Polestar S60 that gave me headaches, even though it was under warranty. I ended up selling less than 3 months of owning it.
However, because I got a very good price from the dealership, I sold it quickly.

I would expect BMW to fix the car and proceed to enjoy it, as recommended above.

Cars are growing in complexity all the time, an engine out repair to replace the turbos is reasonable on a car like that, where it's likely impossible to do the job while the engine is still in the bay.

On the courtesy car topic, unless stated on black on white that the dealer will give you a courtesy car when your car is in for repairs, the courtesy car is given in good faith. I've been here though, fought BMW one time to give me a courtesy car while our 1 series was still on plan and in for a fuel pump replacement, they obliged and gave me one until my car was fixed (think it took 2 weeks).

There are many variables here, you car could have a problem with a bad batch of parts etc, so I say stick it out. It would be a different story if the car has spent x months at the dealership for 1 year of ownership.

If all else fails (buy a Toyota, j/k :D )

In 2016 when I had an issue with my Cooper S, the service advisor had advised me to call BMW-on-call and get the vehicle towed-in rather than driving it to the dealership in order to get a courtesy car from BMW SA.

After a few hours, Woodford car hire dropped off a fairly new F30 320i.

Lets see how long it takes to get this sorted and see how I feel when its finished. Wanted a 2023 SQ8 but could not find one for sale in the country so took the closest thing to it in my opinion. So lets hope for the best and hope my heart feels better when its back.

The first issue is not related to the second so it will be difficult to say it's a lemon at this point unless you can link the two items. What exactly was wrong the first time it went in? Was it a loom/voltage/software?

Not uncommon for these 'new' cars to be 6-12 months old (or even older for some brands) as they sit on lots and become nests to wierd and wonderful creatures as well as experiencing issues with drained batteries (recharging batteries is all a dealer will often do... and hope you drive it enough that the voltage doesn't drop too much so the infotainment/safety systems/transmission etc doesn't give random errors). One of my Alfa-owning friends had half the car replaced only to find out that it was just the battery... as we advised...

There are quite a few things that are engine-out on modern cars. Audi it's even worse...

The service is horrendous though - you have to continuously chase up and if I didn't have the workshop manager and service advisor on whatsapp (as someone above suggested), your experience varies GREATLY from dealer to dealer. Fourways is a junk-grade dealer (and so are a few of the Cape Town dealers as well... but I just can't remember if the one your car is at is on that list...)
