What to buy?

This feels nostalgic, my very first post on this forum was about the same topic... :)

I recently sold my bmw 320d. :'( I am now looking for a less expensive car repayment and insurance wise.

I am willing to spend 80-100k. I can finance a older car and make a plan for the deposit. If I am looking at the BMW flavours, it will have to be e46 and below, the insurance on the e90 is too high...

Im looking for something with some grunt and sound. I think maybe a 328i or a 330i, but im not too sure. I don't mind exploring other brands. It should preferably last me around 4 - 5 years.

I have my eyes on a nice OPC G, one of my favourite cars! Problem is I want a rear wheel drive!! E36 is my favourite BMW so far, but finding one in reasonable shape for sale seems to be a mission.

Short and sweet:
- Rear wheel drive (preferably)
- No crazy high mileage.
- Has to have some power (for them slidessss)
- Wont completely fall apart or cost an arm and a leg to keep on the road.
- Edit: Manual please! Cant do the automatic thing.

Any advice?

Hi Herco,

We have all been in your position regarding finances, My honest advice is get a yourself a good reliable mode of transport like a Polo and forget about the 330i Etc for the time being (You'll be in the same position you were before, except now you having to dish out money for fuel, services, tyres etc) . Once you on your feet again I would say go for it and get your dream car.

Hi Ebo,

Thanks for your input and comments. I was pushing my car budget to the max with the 320d. I can afford to spend ~R5k on my car without fuel a month. But the 320d was more than that. Im sure a less expensive car will fall in that range comfortably.

I hear what you are saying... But I cant see myself driving around in a polo or less.

There is no fucking way. I would rather buy a nice set of Nikes then.

Funny how your sig says:

If you park it and not turn around to look at it as you walk away...YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT THE RIGHT CAR

But your recommend that micra... xD

Keep in mind, that you wont be able to finance a e46, unless through a personal loan. These usually have high interest rates.

You are actually in a perfect situation, to downgrade for a year or two. Pay less on a car in monthly installments, save on maintenance by buying something small and relatively new'ish(polo, etc) and reduce your debt.

Once done, go out and get yourself a nice beemer again.

I would consider it if I find a nice one. I am leaning more towards the E36s though. But a nice E36 328i seems to be a hard thing to find.

That would probably be the responsible thing to do. :p The mistake I made was watching some E36 drift videos again. :(

Suffer a little now, to celebrate a lot later bud. These things has a way of snowballing.

The thing with the E46 is that they are pretty old now. Good ones are not easy to find. If you really want one, rather wait for a good one than grab the first one you can get. Even a good one might need some (ahem) unscheduled maintenance. So keep some money in the bank for that. R100K should be enough for all of the above, but the banks will not do an HP for this. Not sure if an E46 is doable, then...

If you want a low(ish) mileage RWD manual for R100K, a 1-series or an E90 3-series it will have to be. Unless you are willing to look at other brands. In that case, how about this?

800

RWD? Check. Six cylinders? Check. Manual? Check. Low mileage? 137 500, check. Low price? 99 950, check. Not too old? 2007, check. Finance? On sale by by dealer, check. Luxury? Lots of kit, check. Powerful? 153 kW, 252 Nm, check. Fast? Sort of, 0-100 in 8.1 sec. Reliable? It is a Toyota, check. Exciting to drive? Not sure, to be honest. Take it for a spin, find out and let us know.

Wesbank private sales allow for cars under 20 years old as their limit :)

remember, apart from monthly payments on the car, comes maintenance on the car, unless you buy a Chico its not going to be cheap.

i have made the saaaaame mistake you are about to make with bikes and a car, it didnt work out and it took me years to recover.

last year my name got clean, waited some time and now i'm getting a E46 320d tomorrow from a family friend and i will have some change left for unscheduled maintenance.

i feel your pain Herco, i do bud, but you know what, at the end of the day it's our ego that puts us in financial trouble...

whatever you do, dont buy a OPC, selling mine this weekend and maintenance wise she has cost me boatloads.

Let me know you don't take it though as it is a bargain for that type of money

I agree with this being a bargain, but insursance probably won't be cheap and your fuel bill will be through the roof. That is one thirsty 4-cylinder.

To be honest, was not interested in an MPS before since i smoked onew ith my 320d when it only had software and nothing else at all.

However, upon reading about it a little and finding this one 2009 model with such low kms got me a bit intrigued. I'll appreciate any more info you have on this Ferdi, will really help.

I know they werent very liked due to having not being able to put down the 191kws that they claim to have and torque limiting on the first 2 gears to limit slip however few mods and they improve a bit, right?
