From what I can see, you got an e36. Biggest & broadest tyre you can fit is a 235/40/17 but they expensive. The one's you currently got 235/45/17, the sidewall is too thick.

You can also fit 225/45/17 as they much cheaper or 225/40/17 but those are discontinued now.

What is the width of the wheel and for what application?

What he said^^^^

Every (most) tires has a width spec (eg 235), a profile spec (eg 45), and a rim diameter spec (eg 17") and that also determines the minimum or maximum rim width that the tire can be fitted on. This also determines the OD (outside diameter). The exact numbers varies a bit with different manufacturers.

So a typical 205/45-17 tyre will have a min. rim width of 6.5" and a max. of 7.5"

A typical 235/45-17 tyre will have a min. rim width of 7.5" and a max. of 9".

So it really depends what your current rim widths are - it look like you'e on the edge tho.

You can exceed the limits a bit by putting a narrower tyre on a wider rim (typically not the other way around), and then you get the "stretched" look.

You need to look at OD too, as the narrower you go with the same profile, the smaller the OD becomes.

If you want a "smaller" look you can go for 235/40-17, (or even 235/35) but your OD will be slightly smaller. Even smaller you can go to 225/45 or 225/40.

Personally I would stay away from 205s.

If you wish to go wider you could go for 255/40 or 255/35 - but you have to watch for clearance/rubbing issues, and always watch OD.

you really dont need wider than 205 but the rears will look a little stretched if you put 205 there so it might be better to go 225/45 at the back its a common size so it should be way cheaper than the 235s
