What options do I have?

:dunno::thinking::thumb: I have a 1998 325 TDS with a blown engine. I am not having any luck with getting a recon. What are my options here? Am I limited to only another 325 TDS engine, or can I replace this one with a different one, say a 320 D? Excuse my ignorance, but I am not technically minded at all.

Well the 320d motor IMO is out, IMO

Reason being is that you cant just swap in a computer that came with the 320d due to a incompatibility of the bus on the E36 and the E46. Perhaps the bottom ends are interchangeble, I am not sure...

I am not saying its impossible, just that its going to be more money then what its worth. Also finding a recon is going to be really tough, what exactly is wrong.

IMO, you have 3 options, either rebuild your engine and turbo, or swap in a E36 328 petrol engine, but this comes with its own pitfalls as you will need to change out the entire fuel supply management ect. Your last option is to cut your losses, and part out the car, IE sell the bits off of it and buy a new one.

Thank you for your enlightening post. I am not really sure what is wrong, all I understand is that the engine is blown and the head is cracked. I am thinking my best option is to cut my losses. :bawling::cursin::banghead::bawling:

Had a 325tds, all I can tell you it is friggin expensive to repair a 6 cylinder diesel ! Sorry to say but it might be cheaper to sell the car as parts and buy a petrol BMW.

this is only a stab in the dark, but you could try an early (before facelift) 320d engine, seeing as they were still injection distributer and not common rail, the electronics was much simpler.. this would need some more research though, just a thought.
