What is this "shuddering"?

Hey peeps,

For a while now, when pulling away, especially at low rpm there is this shudder that occurs. It's like the car has freaking parkinson's or something! If you rev slightly higher it's not that bad but nonetheless it's irritating the hell out of me and worries me at the same time. Is it the clutch that is worn out or something else? Any suggestions?

PS: It's a 5 speed manual tranny.

Thanks guys!

The E46 again hey.... I have the same issue and had to adapt my driving style to counter, shuddering, rev bounce, scratching gears and backlash... search the form for DCV removal.

CDV delete does not alleviate this sympton.

Peertjies's 2005 E46 318i has the exact same thing and we removed his CDV and bled the system. It's definitely clutch/flywheel related. But since these cars aren't so torque it's more than likely clutch. The LUK kit costs around R1500. Depending on mileage you might replace the DMF as well. That's another R3-4k. But only inspection will tell. Sorry for the bad news man.

My E36 does the same, but not all the time, and only when I`m a little distracted and not really paying attention to pulling away. :fencelook:

But will have to get that checked out sometime as well.

I had the exact symptoms with my 318, but that turned out to be the center bearing that gave in. Car seemed fine while moving, but when pulling away it would shudder. Center bearing is at least somewhat easy to check. Get the car on a lift and remove the shielding. Do this before spending money or more expensive stuff.

When I replaced the clutch on my Z3 they pointed out that the flywheel is slightly warped and that it would cause a shudder when pulling off. And it was in fact so. If it's severe shudder I would recommend you have it looked at.

Mine used to do this as well in hectic traffic...

Hopefully its not too costly to fix.

Murphy's law, shitty service and no courtesy car, so I didn't ate my car in, will take it in to Cedar Isle Auto as they normally have the best service with my car. Will report back as soon as it goes in:thumbdo:

Im on the verge of selling my E46 & guess what i picked up the shudder this week. My luck. My vrou travels to Bryanston everyday & traffic on main just not helping & thats her reason for a Auto car.

It just hit 100 000kms & maybe its time but what a time also

But to all interested buyers that called me i will be sorting it out before i sell.

Now what clutch to buy......

Check the rubber coupling between the gearbox and drive prop shaft. Aka the "guibo"

The voice in the back of your head, “when is it going to break down”…. I’ll probably trade my 325ci way before the clutch explodes…. No more time to waste with try fixing this and that…
