What do you Fanatics think of a E46.....?

The e39 525i, will be similar with regards to servicing costs as an e46 325i, the engine is the same. The facelift with comfort package will be much better as a daily drive than an e46, and you could probably pick it up for cheaper with similar milage.

yeah, I second that.. but dude, in the end, I think what you should do is go find a couple of these cars at car dealerships and test drive them all, thats the only way you will really know what you want..

Clutchy, it does not even really need to be modded, particularly if its a daily drive.

My 730d is bone stock and a very heavy car, and you are witness to the amount of acceleration that it can produce.

M_Pow, comparing a 330d to a E36 M3 is not that obsense, particularly if you are comparing power on a daily drive. Track toy/high speed, yes, two very differant animals, but every day cruising, you would actually be amazed by the 330d.

I suggest going to go and drive one, either a E39 530d and do the preventative maint, or a E46 330d, just to keep your options open, you can pop past my place as well and take my E65 for a spin, and I got a feeling you would be very surprised with the handling/performance.

My E39 had the older 142KW motor (standard). I think the later E46 (standard 150KW from around 2004) was also revised a bit, and was the same one used in the 2004+ X5. However, IIRC torque was limited to 410NM in the 3 series, and unleashed to 480NM/500NM in the X5 :dropjaw: .... Hence, the 330d is fairly unstressed in standard form and has some serious gains when chipped.

I also had a E46 330i before my E39 530d. Both were auto, but the diesel makes it so much better as a daily driver. If it were manual, then I'm not so sure which would be better ....

I suggest you go test drive a 330d. 3.0d turbos are fairly reliable, compared to the 4 potters. The injectors would probably go (or need cleaning) before the turbo, hence you really need to do your homework before buying one to manage that risk. However, the reward is well worth it. In fact, you may find your E36 ///M lacking  at altitude once you get used to something like a chipped 330d .....

Just one more thing to consider though: with the condition of our roads, turbos might not be your highest cost factor. Instead, it may be suspension bits and wheels ...

E34 540....

Motor industructable, and you will find one with high KM's on, so future Km's wont matter.

15k for car, 20k for maintanance (including manual swap) and you are good to go... 35k later

AND you keep the M :)

Dude, you want 330i power! Find a late model 330i sportpack 03'-05'. You get all the groceries with it including 6spd gearbox, it transforms the 330i.
