Hi
I bought a 750iL that needs some tlc but mechanically good for its age ('94).
I want to restore it to its former glory but needs help and advice.
Hope i'm at the right place for the support i'm going to need in the months that follows.
My previous BMW's were: (85) 518i, ('87) 320i, ('80) 733i, ('93) 740i, ('99) 750iL.
Hope there are members that can help.
Thanks
Colette

Hi Colette, welcome to the forum. You are going to be the envy of many a member here, with that 750iL. I'm almost certain there will be members that can assist with a load of things to do with that car.

Enjoy your stay, and I hope you find what you looking for.

I for one am one of those members who would LOVE a 750.

A 99 will make it an E38, if so gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous, and I would be happy to offer any assistance I can, Bimmerman is our resident E38 specialist,

Would love to see that old lady, are you in Gauteng, very nice selection of cars past and present.

I love the 7's, I really do, they are of course, the BMW flagships,

Edit : Wait, I misread your post, why did you go from a '99 750 back to a '94. If thats the case, you have the E32 is that correct ?

Hi :excited:
Yeah I've got the E32. And maybe you would think that I'm totally cuckoo coz I'm busy buying a 1990 7 as well whoohoo

I'm a silly lady with big love for big cars (German cars).

Maybe you can tell me then why on earth does the the speedo, rev counter and all the other gauges just go haywire while I'm driving? :cursin:
Like for instance, yesterday on our way home from Pta to Thabazimbi, everything just died on me.

That could be a number of things, but the most sensible is that your cluster or IKE module is packing up, it could be a bad ground as well.

IF the rest of the car remains fine, no jerking, no aircon cutting, no loss of power, no sudden error lights when the cluster comes back such as Transmission, or airbag or brakes, you will more then likely find it is the cluster module.

Define haywire, do they just cut off completly, like the car is not on, or do they give you false values ?

While the car is running everything just died. (on the dash) The car keeps on driving quite normal. Oh yeah, and then there is lost of power as well. We can not go over +- 175km/h. :mmm: That is confusing me totally.

mine also didn't wana go over 175km/h once, so I put it in 6th gear and revved it up to 5800RPM!

I love your selection of cars! The bigger the BMW, the better!

Well the loss of power indicates that there is a voltage drop in the vehicle, meaning its either the one of the following in order of difficualty.

1. Battery problems - Although not sure of this one on an E32, newer models such as the E65 it is an issue
2. Bad ground somwehre
3. Bad altenator

Look next time if it happens, if the power/dash cuts, turn on the interior light, when the dash comes back, see if there is an increase in the intensity of the light, that should confirm global power issues with the car.

Also, is it bump related, when you hit a bump or a dip, is that when it happens ?

Hi, what size BMW have you got? Mine is a 750iL. How can I put a 6th gear in it?

Thanks, I'm busy buying another 750 now, going to get it month end.

Thanks for this amazing help. I think it can maybe be a bad ground.

Thats usually what it is with these symptoms, good luck.

Any decent auto electrician will be able to sort this out without much issue.

 Good morning.
I don't know if here are any descent auto electricians around here, ha-ha-ha. But I'm planning to take it to one in town. I just pray that he knows what he's doing.
Have a great day.

Hi Colette, welcome !
I've always wanted a 750il ! acctually, I still want one. and now you have 2 ? :nono: not fair. you'll have to share one with me :excited: ..

hmm, I was researching the 750i once cause I was gonna put its V12 engine into a lamborghini diablo kitcar.. the engine has 3 management systems, one for each side of the engine, and one that controls both of those.. if you lose abit of power, the car could be in protection mode and switched off half the engine.. could be from anything, it has 2 fuel pumps, 2 airflow meter's, 2 of everything needed to run a single side of the engine at any one time.. so the power cuts could be anything, best thing would be to get it hooked upto a diagnostic computer and get the error codes read off, I know zaleonardz is getting a new cable for the E34's in the next few days, I know it will work with the E31, so maybe PM him and ask if he can help u out, I'm quite sure he wouldn't mind. loss of speedo etc.. most likely a wiring problem or wheelspeed sensors or abs unit..

btw, what colour is your car ? ! please post some pics ! would love to see it.. and I'm quite sure the people here wanna see who's driving a 750 also ..

clutchy.
