so...

at about 3 i was to leave and go to the south coast for the weekend...

on the way to pic someone up i go around a corner and next thing the steering gets very heavy and i fight with the wheel to get the car to go where it should...

coast around the next corner... then the squealing started and the rear view was full of smoke...

by this time i knew the AUX belt must be the problem...

i stop the car open the bonnet and take the belt out... it was quite hot and got stuck to my hand :yuck:

so anyways i remove the fan with random tools i borrowed from my friend... feel to see what pulley will not move...

the power steering pump has failed :argh: so i guess i need to go shopping... if anyone has bought this pump recently in kzn please tell me how much and where im guessing it should cost 1-1.5k steelers want 9k for it lol

I'm sure Sidewayz said he paid R2k fitted Ali.

Moranor, Drop It got a quote from Martins @ R1650 for my E46. They in North Coast Road in Durban and they are open on Saturdays. I'm going to go there tomorrow as well to get the pump and some other stuff.

Yip and sundays too, I bought the fuel pump last sunday :) . Township even will deliver to your door. E36 is cheaper but e46 can't be that much more.

Sorry guys I'm mistaken :(

Can't talk right now I'm eating humble pie

Damn that is not very nice, I hope you get it sorted quick.

So I am just wondering where there any signs before it packed up or did it seem fine the one day and was busted the next?

Wow, so it packed up with no warning and no noises either? :nonono:

Still on my to-do list for my Wife's car - the power steering pump has been noisy from day one! :yuck:

I know that they tend to fail from time to time, but I would have thought that you would have enough warning - last thing I want is to get a call from my Wife stuck on the side of the road!! Better get this done ASAP! Will be interesting to know what failed or broke!

If the pulley can still turn then you should be able to drive the car, you will just have a hell of a time trying to turn the steering wheel.

From what moranor described it would seem that a part of the impeller or something broke off inside the pump and jammed the shaft and preventing the pulley from turning, in this case I don't thing you would be able to drive the car for very long, as the belt would probably giving quickly due to the friction, and this would very bad as the waterpump is driven from the same belt. So can and could have been very bad indeed.
