that is the radar image based in the centre at Irene, stretching to 300km away.

you will see 3 letter codes all over , these are abbreviations for towns etc
ie
SOW = Soweto
KRD = Krugersdorp
SPR = Springs
PTA = Pretoria

you can sort of work out most of the other places

the image is what the weather radar sees, with the main weather outlined in Blue, and a 30 minute trend vector in Red.

the inner portion of the storm cell goes up in gradient colours, and Yello means reasonably intense, if it goes into the red and beyond colour then it is time to hide your car

I am a pilot, so I should know whats happening on the radar image, so I will try and explain.

So the areas that are outlined in blue are where there are current storm cells that are building, and the red outlines are where the storms cells are predicted to move.

With regards to the colour scale, the green is light moisture in the clouds that are building and if you look at the scale on the side, as the storm builds then the colour will change as the storm becomes progressively worse. Yellow and red are server and there is a good chance of heavy rain with a chance of hail depending on the temperature at the time.

Lastly the abbreviations are the various areas around JHB. for example HLA is Lanseria, and SOW is Soweto :)

Hope that helps :) So it looks like the north of JHB it is ok so far, however the south is not looking to good.

update

massive storm over the Vaal Dam area, moving towards Villiers/Frankfort

Another storm seems to have arisen out of a merge of smaller cells in the Krugersdorp area, stretching from Rustenberg down to Carltenville and and another portion even further south to Vanderbijl Park...all moving South-east wards towards JHB city
