Lightning hit the telephone line. Modem dead, wife's pc dead, network card on my new pc dead also.
So much for those stupid lightning protection devices...

I make it a habit to unplug the multiplug that the PC and modem are connected to during a lightning storm.

and don't forget to unplug the physical telephone line leading into the modem, most lightning strikes come thru the phone line, so even if the computor is unplugged from the main electrical system, it can still get nailled...I know the hard way

I know the hard way a few times being on the receiving end of this. Didn't realise a strike a few kms away can be expensive

It's my usual practice to unplug everything but that storm came out of nowhere yesterday, lightning hit before I had the chance to unplug.
