Water spots on chrome trim?

Hi Guys,

Seen allot of chatter about this on the international forums. Seems most BMWs suffer some permanent water spots on the chrome trim.

Anyone here have any experience with products or methods to remove said spots/stains/oxidation?

I used to use brasso on my dads cabby. when that cured I would polish it up and then take rim wax and give it a once over to keep the shine and keep away the water marks. then every month would be a rim wax after the wash. never had the problem ever again.

Babyoil on a piece of cotton wool...trust me

That would probably work because it keeps the wet look (since the spots are not there when wet).

Will give it a try.

I have tried Silvo...didn't help at all. Some guys are seeing results with Braso when some heat is applied.

Just wrap the trim in gloss black. Kill 2 birds with one stone.
No more water spots and looks much better

Those trim pieces have a clear coat over them, so traditional metal polish will not make a difference.

I would give it a gentle wetsand with 2500 - 3000 rit sandpaper and use some compound to polish it again.

I tried various little things to get them to look better, and my final solution is a clear coat of semi-gloss lacquer. The water spots vanish almost completely (95%) and it keeps the silver trimming of the car which I like :) Will post some before and after pics tomorrow.

The problem is not the chrome itself but rather the existing clear coat. It doesn't weather well at all. When its wet it looks fine but as soon as it dries it becomes dull and spotty again. The new layer of clear lacquer has the same wet effect but it doesn't go dull. It stays shiny as it dries and the spots are gone.

So is it not the top layer that is stained. A good polish. Possibly tape around the trim and use a DA polisher. Polishing by hand may not be abrasive enough.
