Wastegate Rattle

Hi Guys

So I fitted a DP, DCI, charge pipe, BOV and finally a JB4 G5 iso.
Just after fitting the JB4 I started to get wastegate rattle.
It an E92 N54 with 97000km. Out of motorplan.
So far I got mixed opinions.
BMW wants just over R30k to replace them:cry:

Has anybody had/have this prob and lived with it for a while?
Does this mean my turbos are on their way out?
What are my options here guys?

Thanks!

Tried all the JB settings, nothing works so far.

If it's only occurred after fitting the JB then it's quite plausible that the default wastegate position (DWP) the unit is set up for might be wrong for the current state of your wastegates.

Start by reducing menu 10 (DWP) slightly. e.g. if it's on 4000rpm, reduce to 3000rpm or lower if need be. Slowly dial it back up again until rattle reappears. You can also try different values (from 2500rpm to 3800rpm) for menu 12 if your rattle occurs at low throttle.

Your only other alternative if the above does not work is to have someone attempt to tighten the wastegate actuators. Failing that new turbos are needed.

I only noticed now that you fitted DP's simultaneously so after exhausting setting options with JB what actually occurs is the downpipe diameter resonates the rattle louder than it rattled with stock downpipe. I am sure with the right setting it can be reduced though.

Spot on advise.

To the author : The lastest firmware update of JB will eliminate wastegate rattle. Be sure you have the lastest version. Check the Rennzport group here that will help you alot that answers all these questions and more.

Dont stress about it we all went through these hiccups. Aftermarket DPs will make the rattle louder. If you get someone to rev your car slighlty you will be able to hear the gates open and close by standing at the rear of your car. DPs amplify this rattle.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Have tried using the JB to reduce the rattle, the sound does go down a little but its still irritating :argh:

Any one knows where I can get the waste-gate actuators tightened?
Will they need to remove the turbo's?

Best place to have it done is at BMW , they have the tools to do it correctly.

If I remember correctly max turns you can go is 24.

Turbos dont need to be removed.

Hi Guys,

Just to get some clarity in this waste-gate rattle which is common with N54 engines, do we simply replace the turbos or what would be the best solution? My car performs fine but the noise is embarrassing .

Any advise?

Use a JB to reduce the sound. Unless you want to spend on a new pair of turbos

Thanks! Definitely seems to be a favoured option. Other than that, replace the turbos?

Typical stealer response to quote on replacing everything in sight without investigating. :RedNo:

Isn't the issue with the actuator rod being stretched hence the flap rattles. Which would explain why tightening them will help reduce the rattle.

Correction. Forge sells waste gate actuators.

Issue is with wastegate flap which is part of the turbo housing.

Thanks KRS24.

M3_devil so u recommend I just replace the turbos?

I dont want to sound stupid or anything but would like to know if its possible, cant you block the standard wastegate off completely and remove from operation and then fit an aftermarket external wastegate or such?

Still new to turbos and all so please bear with me

its possible but its not worth the hassle unless you single turbo it...

Thanks, just did some reading and saw that it wouldnt be as easy to do

Rather use it as an excuse for bigger turbos!
