Yeah block was honed, not sure on the size, it was not done by me personally, I went to visit the mechanic many a times as it took 7 weeks, so everytime he explained what stage he was at and what he discovered as he took it apart.

One day I was there the head was off and he had seated the new rings and showed me where it was honed and then said the old rings were paper thin.

My point I'm trying to make is that the previous owner/mechanic said he spent 12 to 13k on the head and replaced all the guides and valves. And if he did that, the head would of had to send it in and the block would be exposed as I saw it, so he would of seen or if he cared he would have examined the block and determined the rings needed to be done.

But I'm over it now, I'm just glad I found someone I can trust and who could get it sorted out.

Rings do not go paper thin...

I appreciate that you do not have deep insight into engines and the like however I just wanted to highlight the inconsistencies you may have been told or misinterpreted.

Wish you well with your car.

I see what you mean. I seem to take things very personally regarding this car, I think it's all the effort and money spent. Okie so I was a bit ignorant in saying rings can be checked with the head off. And maybe "paper thin" is an exaggeration. But I see how a "passed" compression test seems incorrect now. You guys reckon I should change the fuel pump as well now?

eish, yeah im not sure who to believe now.. you, your new mechanic or the original owner :biglol:

not sure if the car has had this done yet, but they are serious issues that will negate the money you've just spent so far on the engine, before worrying about the fuel pump:

- radiator expansion tank
- radiator hoses
- tensioners, rollers and belts
- waterpump
- possibly thermostat might need replacement
- radiator pressure test

if any of those fail, you will overheat and you'll most likely end up buying the equivalent of another second hand e46.

All above was done so that's why I was thinking about the pump as its probably not been done yet.

What's the latest with the car Kurosaki Ichigo?
Fancy meeting you here, Uzumaki Naruto It's all good and I have 12 months or 10000km warranty so my mind is at ease. It's running like a dream and oil usage is normal now and no misfiring. I'm just riding it in now. Will take it on the open road once I clock 1000kms.

Just wanted some advice - I've done about 5000kms since the rebuild, the mechanic put in 25w60 oil and I'm having no issues, I want to change the oil, should I continue using this oil or switch to 5w40 or something else? Thanks in advance.

All our BMWs are Dealer serviced and use 5W30 oil , that includes my E30 , I would have thought that car would use a different oil but they also fill it with 5W30 ..

Sometimes the wrong oil can cause issues on a car , I was told the wrong oil can cause issues on my E46s valvetronic motor and some other little pieces . Anyhow I use whatever BMW says I should use in the car . which went from Castrol 5W30 to BMW twiin power ( Shell) 5w30 .

Have never had a problem .
