Wanted E90 330d

Hi guys me again

I was initially looking for a N54 135i but have decided to can that idea as I have just done renovations and don't want to stretch my budget further. I am keen on a E90 330d for these reasons
  • Torque
  • Comfort
  • Reliabilty
  • Fuel Economy? What can I expect?

I have read through Colin's thread and some others and seen that I should look out for the following:
  • Front Shocks
  • Injectors
  • Turbo

Auto seems to be the preference too. I have an extended warranty with Hollard on the OPC and if I can transfer it to the BMW that should take care of the turbo and injector worries. I'm sure this has been discussed over and over but I haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for yet. If you guys could please give your advice it would be appreciated. Also if you could keep your eyes open for decent specimens that would be great. When I find something good I would be really grateful if one of the experts could come with me to inspect the vehicle. I'm looking for a white auto model for < R160 000. I realize that the mileage will be rather high on a vehicle for that price but I am willing to live with it as long as the car is mechanically and electrically sound.

Awesome cars, check to see if the crank pulley has been replaced, apart from that if you change oil regularly and warm up and cool down they are bullet proof.

Thanks for reply I'll make sure to add that to the things to check list

Do yourself a favour and get the lci version.
Abit more pricey but looks far better than the pre-lci (in my opinion), and the performance of those cars are plain down insane!

I was initially looking for a N54 135i but have decided to can that idea as I have just done renovations and don't want to stretch my budget further. I am keen on a E90 330d for these reasons
  • Torque - Stock around 450nm to 500nm. Modded - 550nm upwards
  • Comfort - As with many BMW's
  • Reliabilty - Very reliable. Common issues listed below.
  • Fuel Economy? What can I expect? Stock - 10l/100km to 12l/100km. Modded - 7l/100km to 9l/100km

I have read through Colin's thread and some others and seen that I should look out for the following:
  • Front Shocks - Mine is on 196k km and still OEM
  • Injectors - One of mine went, replaced all at 155k km.
  • Turbo - You can take this off if you follow good warming and cooling process. My 330d is still on its stock turbo. I have only heard of one other 330d (E90) popping a turbo.
  • Crankshaft Dampener Pulley - Mine went at around 160k km.

Auto seems to be the preference too. I have an extended warranty with Hollard on the OPC and if I can transfer it to the BMW that should take care of the turbo and injector worries. I mentioned it to someone this weekend, the 330d is the best all rounder and to me, a magnificent vehicle. It ticks the boxes, has the performance capabilities plus a family vehicle and amazing on long trips. Economy is thee most amazing bit.

Auto would be preferred choice, it handles the daily commutes better than Manual. Although, manual might be faster and more economical.

don't think twice about a 330D, onto my second one and its without a doubt the best car I have owned.

If budget allows go for the LCI (I have owned both)

Fuel Economy? What can I expect? I`m averaging 9.2l/100km with 80/20 urban/freeway driving.

Arbee thanks so much for that really appreciate it :ty: Your car is just superb

As for modding I don't know, the OPC has left a bad taste in my mouth as it runs well for a while and then something else goes wrong - just wear and tear stuff like clutch, dv etc but I just want to hop in the car and drive without worrying about something going wrong. It's also not easy getting parts for the OPC's. I would like to pay the BMW off as quickly as possible so I can start investing my extra cash on investments and then buy a car that is fast from the factory so I don't have to mod it.

:ty: again gents

hi.

you cant go wrong,as arbee says ticks all the right boxes,i have kept mine stock and down to the coast recently fully loaded did 6.5/100l,around Pretoria I get 9.3/100 but I must say I do not drive it gentle.

comfort,i drive to Ballito non stop and still feel relaxed ,does not feel like a 6 to 7 hour journey, but more like a 10 minute drive.

the only thing I have replaced under m/p since I bought mine last year is front brake pads and clutch, passenger side window winder mechanism, besides the regular service.

the only complaint I have,if you can call it a complaint,is that the rear tyres don't last very long, when I had 18 inch on the rear end would tend to spin and step out before traction control kicked in,with the 19 inch it doesn't do it that badly

personally I prefer the pre- lci,car looks cleaner ,less lines, but that's just me,also hoping to hang on to this one for a long time to come.

as nike ads say, just do it:thumbs:

If you prefer automatic, then you absolutely cannot go wrong with these cars, but nothing wrong with manual too! I would give my left nut to find an E90 330d M-sport manual like Colin's! They seem to be extremely hard to find, especially down here!

Thanks mate but I'm a bit skeptical about a car with mileage that high especially if I plan on keeping it for a few years. What do you guys think?

The second car I owned was automatic and I really enjoyed it. I have some contacts at two or three BMW dealers so I'm going to ask them to keep an eye out for me. Thanks Phillip

Hehe  Andy has a manual as well, but personally, I would go for the automatic.
If you look after them, they last forever.
Rayzor has LCI 330d with over 150 000km and it still goes like a dream

Manual is scarce and the clutch is also a wear and tear item. Yes the Manual is faster and more economical than the auto but in the long run more maintenance.

I would also highly recommend the LCI in auto. Even in stock trim it's only slightly slower than a fully worked pre lci.

It's clear even from the inputs here that the 330d is an absolute winner. The new electric turbos are extremely reliable, even with BMW's appallingly long service intervals do they last in excess of 200k km.

Tyres will need to be budgeted. (torque :) )

As well as other maintenance items that creep up toward the 200k km mark. Crank pulley, waterpump, thermostat, injector service, fuel pump, to name a few. As with any car maintenance will need to be done.

It's my 2nd 330d I've owned and 4th diesel now overall. I'm totally converted.
