The M54B30 is a 3.0 L (2979 cc) successor of the 2.8 L BMW M52. Bore remains the same at 84 mm (3.3 in), but stroke is increased 5.6 mm (0.2 in) to 89.6 mm (3.5 in). Power is 231 hp (170 kW) at 5,900 rpm while torque is 221 ft•lbf (300 Nm) at 3,500 rpm.
It is an all-alloy engine with Al-Sil block. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with Double VANOS (variable valve timing) and features fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece forged crankshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold.
