Viscous Fan

Hi Guys. I own a 2003 320i E46 steptronic. The car had been loosing water so i took it to the radiator specialist and they told me that my radiator was cracked and the viscous fan was shot. Any ways a bought replacement parts from a company that operates not too far from me and had them fitted. Now today when i fetched the car , I noticed that the fan is like really loud and gets even louder when i accelerate. I also noticed the idle is off , not badly but i can feel the car sort of shuddering. Please help , any info will be greatly appreciated :argh:

Feel your pain....its really loud....and you lose from because of it...as the engine works harder to turn it....

Best solution get the original BMW viscous.:thumbs:

Andy, I am with Heven on this one...but, before you try to modify and replace, find out what your new viscous fan would cost....might be cheaper and easier than the mods for an electric fan...

The fan is getting louder, as it is in full lock, and it gets louder as you accelarate...it definitely means its locking up at all times...can work, but helluva noisy...

Do the exercise of costs, and make a decision from there....and remember, if you replace the viscous fan clutch yourself...its a left hand thread on the shaft....and dont over tighten it...

Hope it helps....good luck and let us know if you experience any problems, perhaps we could try assist further.

Electric Fan conversion would be best, but there is a massive cost difference when buying new, R300 for a new fan VS R3000 for an electric Fan Replacement unit.....

Hi. Thanks for the advice. Im getting a new viscous fan tomorrow from the agents. I just noticed that a spoke from my fan blade is broken. Will this be the cause of the vibration I feel inside the car now?

@Andy,

+1 on securing a new viscous clutch....remember what I said, just spin the assembled fan and clutch on by hand, using a spanner may cause you headaches down the road...and keep that thread direction in mind at all times...tightening a left hand thread causes a real ballache when youwant to loosen it and forget that its left handed. I learnt the hard way...on more than 2 occasions!!!!:nonono:

I wouldnt think it would cause a major problem, however, anything that rotates and is missing some symmetry may give you an unbalanced mass.

Im pretty sure that this is the cause of your vibration. Probably not a "Good , Good, Good Vibration".....Im sure a replacement on the fan would remedy the problem, as well as up the effeciency of the cooling.

And the vibration of missing fan blades stuffs up the water pump and viscous clutch pretty quickly. Electric fan will give you more throttle response and better gas mileage, fact.
