Viper Exhaust doubt

Hi guys,

As I explained in another little thread, I bought a 320i e90. It sounds really nice and with the decats even better. So I got curious and bored and enquired with Viper for a full exhaust system. They quoted R11 500 by the way, for those interested, but they claimed a 14kw gain. Nothing against Viper at all, they are awesome, but a 14kw gain on a NA 4 pot with 110kw.. I doubt it. I'm thinking, at most, 7kw?

Does this even sound remotely feasible or plausible? Experience and opinions would be appreciated.

Sounds legit.

Also, i have it on good authority all Viper exhausts are installed with this to make sure the extra
power claims are met.

Those power gains are optimistic. Realistically 5KW. To be honest the biggest difference is felt with the responsiveness. Does the R11500 include branches or is it just from the decat back?

Honestly, I would take those figures with a pinch of salt but around the 5kw mark makes sense. An exhaust system should not be considered a power mod on a naturally aspirated car. Its purely for aural enjoyment, improved response and to an extent better breathability.

I have Viper branches and a performance exhaust that was fitted back in 2015 on my E46, best move I ever made. Car feels a little better according to the butt dyno, but really can't be bothered about the gains. One of the best sounding systems I have ever heard on a M54B30.

Abel is the only guy I've come across with a degree in Harmonics that works with exhaust system fitment, so I wouldn't discredit the work he does..

Zero chance the power claim is real... Not even with headers. Even serious systems on turbo cars don't make huge claims anymore (and everyone knows the before/after dyno tricks)

That said, quality and sound with Viper are pretty good from what I have seen and heard.

Yes, full system, but yeah in my mind 5- MAYBE 7kw max

Thanks guys, yeah 14kw to me is well, unbelievable. 5-7kw is my guess, and that is not worth R11k for me.

look ill disagree on the point of an exhaust system not being a power mod on a NA car. A well made custom exhaust and header with good research behind it and complimenting the rest of the setup can certainly yield good results depending on the stock system and vehicle. I dont know this engine but ja.

The key being the rest of the set up, with the exhaust system complimenting the entire package..

An exhaust system alone on a NA car will not wow anyone with gains. It does aid drivability to an extent, but the enjoyment accompanying the change in tone, is where the smiles are, at least in my experience. A <5kw gain at the fly, won't feel like much once you account for the drivetrain loss and other factors.

I had someone tell me they were promised +70kw on an already highly strung NA GT4... and that was with no major mods in the form of turbo/superchargers/stroker kits/head work etc etc... Tune and pipes. I am not going to be controversial and post the shop name that quoted the guy this, but at the same time I have no doubt that there are people who totally believe their NA sports or supercar is making x, y or z just because the tuner said so and a certain amount of money was exchanged.

Either way if you're changing exhaust as part of all the other mods, you can't exactly claim that the exhaust got you a +10% gain when you've done bunch of other stuff...

@Jakz A bit off topic, are you the guy who was on the local Type R forum a few years ago with the turbo Jazz?
Same person or was there another turbo Jazz?

Abel Dos Santos is a master at his craft who has been around for ever.
When the VR6 was still new, he spent a very long time testing different setups until he found the perfect solution.

He did an amazing full setup on my 1st car many moons ago.

He has always been pricey, but his workman ship and knowledge is top notch.

why don't you ask for that price to include a before and after dyno, then you can see for yourself.
im pretty sure he means at the flywheel, which im guessing at the fly that gain is possible

No No, never got on a forum that time. Was a bit of a fuck up waiting to happen to be honest. Was basically a bolt on system, looking back the crash was a blessing.

Thanks guys, I'm not really all that interested in modifications on this car to be honest, just interesting claims. I'll drive her a year or two then upgrade. This car is just so lovely to cruise in. Hopefully a F30 328i is in the scope then.

The lekka sound just makes it feel faster. I had a full exhaust and decat branches on my E46 330i and it made an extra 8kw. The biggest difference came in when they tried an x-pipe, gave a nice torque curve from 3600rpm on the dyno, thing pulled like a freight train on highways.
