Vanos 528i E39

Is there a certain way of determining if the vanos is not functioning on a single vanos 528i 1998 model E39?
Car idles perfectly, runs well, average on the open road about 11km/l (9l/100km) and is perfect except that at 198000km i feel that the vanos is perhaps not performing as it should.
Will codes show anything??

I'd say your VANOS is working, when Truvalu had an issue with his he was using like 20l/100Km

Yes VANOS problems would show up in the codes for sure, the DME monitors it.

rick, collapsed/worn VANOS seals have to be almost non existent before a fault is generated. Solenoids on the other hand will throw a p1016 code I think
