Valve Stem Seals - E90 2005

Hi Guys, new on this forum, name is Thabo.

I have a 320i e90 that is puffing smoke on take off, have replaced the oil separator, and all that is left is valve stem seals. I know this may have been covered before, but just asking for a push to the right direction as to who I can take my car to, for replacing these babies.

I hear its a bit expensive, but could use a more reasonable and reliable mech! :ty:

I am based in Edenglen, have already called Sav at savspeed, he reckon it will set me back R10 - 12K

Alex from Kyalami Auto recons the same range, just waiting for Rob Green to quote me.

I see that my wallet is starting to loose weight as we speak. he:cry:

Tune tech quoted me R11,670 for the vale stem seals, oil separator (if needed), oil level sensor (if needed), Liquimoly oil, oil filter, air filter, valve cover gasket, etc.

Unfortunately it will always be expensive as the cams and lifters need to come out. Its not a 2 hour job.

N46 engines are prone to valve stem leaking. If I were you, I would try a slightly thicker oil and see if that stops the smoke, then save up because it will start again after a few thousand kilometers.

Get a quote from BMW as well. I was quoted around R8k all inclusive and that's on the 7-series. They have special tools to do the job without taking the heads apart.

I just googled Butler and they quoted 15k,

If it wasn't for the take off smoke, then I wouldn't be going through this ordeal

Sheesh every other dealership has a different story. It's like elective surgery. You want something done and am willing to pay for it...simple as that. Their systems tell them exactly how long any given job is allowed to take ffs. Call Cedar Isle Auto and speak to Silas. Ask him to send you a cost estimate and then either have it done there or forward that Estimate to Isando.

Hugo you are the best. Spoke to Silas and he quoted me R9800 inclusive, plus he will workout a discount on top of this. I will get my warranty to be involved as well on this one. :ty: you are a legend

Frankenthread....Hey OP, glad to see the residents put you on track.
It would be interesting to see at what km's our e90 320i's need this done. I'm on 125k and no smoke yet, so I'm waiting. What mileage are our other 320's on before they puff?
