The smg pump primes for a few seconds when opening the door. I’ve been told to wait for the pump to finish doing its thing before I start the car. What should I be looking out for when it’s on its way out?
There a few ways, so in my experience it can be leaking so losing pressure and causing the pump to work (when you hear it working constantly) to hold pressure up, the pump eventually overheats and takes a break. Then the pump itself is going out, in this scenario it is not a constant buzzing under the car but a intermittent tired sound when opening the door.
A new pump on opening the door for me worked for about 4-6 seconds then off. Once you begin driving and shifting, pressure decreases and pump fills it up again at 4-6 seconds of running. It should give you comfort though that Tunetech have a refurb solution for the whole pump assembly that would cost around 15k or there about if need be. That 15k is a fraction of the cost for a whole new pump assembly.
But enough about the issues, let's get to why you bought it (The filth that is a v10 )
Here is a option: Straight piped v10 this was my car and the windows were up.

So one week in the DSC and check engine light came on. I had the car booked in with tune tech for the bearings today, so thought it best for them to diagnose before I scared myself with thoughts of actuators. As luck would have it I was not in luck.
So here is the list of what needs to be done:
Bearings, oil pump and vanos pipe
Recon steering rack
Engine mountings
Thermostat
Throttle actuators x 2 (only one bank with errors but might as well do both)
Control arm bushes
Exhaust
Air filters
Stage 2 software
My wife hasn’t left me yet, but with more bills like these I might be in trouble.
Let’s hope these bills will guarantee me some v10 thrills... :smilebounce:

I’m sure it will be worth it, and the peace of mind once done will be great.
What’s the damage for all of the above?

The vanos pipe is a recommended repair for most V10s
TurboLlew said:Nobody believed me when I said the F10 was cheaper (including the purchase price 6 years ago) than a V10 LMFAO. Still love them though. It separates the men from the boys cash wise. You can drive an F10 with motorplan and monthly payments, but to keep a V10 on the road and mint, you need cash... lots and lots of cold hard cash (RIP if you're using a credit card for this LOL).
You will also never get the R100K back.... or the other 20 or 30 you will pay for VANOS... or the 50 to 100K gearbox/clutch job when each of these crop up... cos the person you would want to sell the car on to will have no comfort from it being done at this point. There are many guys who bought 'sorted' or 'clean' V10s and then had to redo these things anyway. @"Neven" has stories.
Still cheaper than buying a Gallardo for those V10 noises! Though R8 V10 might actually be a cheaper and more reliable way than buying a cheap BMW V10 soon.
