My dad's turbo of his pre-lci e90 320d blew :thumbdo: he had the software done then the turbo blew... Now the problem is my dad received some advice from a few people and one especially prominent guy who is known for BMW and that is Achmat Achmat, and he advised my dad to remove it because the car will NOT be reliable with the software because the power is too much for the standard turbo etc, he says that the only way that the software will be reliable is if certain things are changed like bigger/better turbo and intercooler etc. I always believed running software on these standard e90 320d's were reliable? Can anyone shed some light on this matter or even experience because my dad is too scared he rather wants to remove the software. Cape Turbo is going to have the turbo reconditioned to brand new and once the turbo is fitted the car must then come back to them and it will then go on the computer and they will do a thorough check of the turbo and all pipes etc to see if it's perfect then they will boost the turbo themselves but he said it would be very safe and reliable though not as fast as the software was, and then also he gives a 6 month guarantee on it. Any info or feedback from people that is running software on their stock cars and how reliable it is would be appreciated :ty:

mmmm...

Software on a BMW 320d is reliable, it also depends on the mileage, condition & overall upkeep of the car as well.

Software on its own can be detrimental but it works hand in hand, bigger turbo & intercooler is NOT always needed.

Whats the mileage on your dad's car? many factors that could have caused the turbo to go pop...

Achmat Achmat is talking through his arse, mapped bmw diesel's are extremely reliable, and there is no need to upgrade thr turbo or the intercooler. Unless the tuner loaded a crap file and boosted the hell out the turbo there was most likely another underlying issue that caused the turbo to blow. I would also advise against a recon diesel turbo they tend not to last as long so i would suggest replacing it with a new one, i believe its a Mitsubishi unit.

generally, the guys who rebuild the turbo should be able to tell you exactly what failed on it....

if there is a boost leak, the turbo can overspeed....if the oil isnt changed often, then the oil lines get blocked etc. in other words, there are lots of things that can cause a turbo to let go..... the software probably pushed the limits a bit and something gave in

This is also what I believe because I always hear about so many 320ds doing software, surely someone would've said something

Well the guy at Cape Turbo said that something went into the turbo and that's why it gave in, and the mechanic said he thinks that one of the turbo rotors seized due to oil starvation due to the wrong oil filter , we getting the turbo back tomorrow so we will hear a full report, so actually it comes to a conclusion that it couldn't have been because the software , this is putting my dad at ease lol he's deciding to keep the software on in the meantime and drive the car slow just to see and then Cape Turbo will put the car on the computer and check to see how aggressive the map is , thanks to everyone for the feedback, it's much appreciated :ty: will give feedback once the car is checked out

yeah, im sure it was just a maintenance related problem that killed the turbo. would be good to know exactly what broke though...so keep us posted.

wrong oil filter? or maybe the filter hasnt been changed in a looooooong time?

do you know what oil you guys were using in the car? i'd recommend a good full synthetic going forward.... synthetics withstand heat-cycling much better and are more resistant to coking and sludging that semi-synth or mineral oils. you need a good quality oil especially in a turbo diesel.

another good tip, do a full oil service more regularly than often... iv'e change mine out between 6000km's and 10,000kms depending on what kind of driving is done. fresh oil in the system keeps everything nice :chef:

Okay yes the guy said something definitely went into the turbo so that was the cause.

Yes the oil filter my dad fitted was an aftermarket one, the mechanic said to always use BMW filters for the 320d, and he through in fully synthetic oil think it was castrol not sure but it was fully synthetic oil , and he just did the oil change and the new oil filter like a month or 2 ago.

He dropped the turbo off at the mechanic today and we will probably get the car tomorrow inshaa Allah, he removed all the boost pipes and flushed the cooler and everything just to make sure everything is as it should be, then the car will go back to Cape Turbo for another check and on the computer to check how aggressive the map is that was loaded on the car.
