Unlocking an E39 when the battery is flat

Hi,
So my father drives an E39 528i. 1998 model.
He is unable to unlock his car as the battery is flat.
He has two keys... A normal metal key and plastic key. When he tries to unlock the car by the driver door the key turns left and right, but nothing happens.
He has used the plastic key to see if he can unlock the boot, but again nothing. I thought it will be a mechanical action if the car's battery is flat, but nothing is happening.

Does anyone know how we can unlock this car without having to break the lock and replace it with something else?

Howsit bud, try the following....
Insert the key.
Pull on the door handle as if to open.
While pulling on the handle, turn the key.
This is how it's done on an e34.
