Under bonnet sound insulation- what to do?

Hi all,

So I'm busy with bits and bobs on my car, and the sound deadening under the bonnet is looking in a sorry state. Not sure if it's from getting wet with the odd engine clean over the years, or whether it's simply old age.

It seems very brittle, and no longer locates in the slot tabs on the bonnet on each side, only the mounting screws in the middle are holding it up. If I flick it with my finger, it seems to crumble and deposit a layer of dust all over the motor.

From what I've read it's for sound deadening. Are there any negatives to remove it completely?

It's not like the N52 is a crappy sounding motor that should be seen but not heard, and I don't think the engine heat should affect the paint on the bonnet at all.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

New BMWs don't have any sound insulation there (but probably have more deadening elsewhere), so my feeling is remove it for now. If the noise is actually louder and bothering you, get a new one.

Took mine off my 335 and didn't notice any sound difference. Should help with cooling if anything. Not sure if it helps in winter, but the n54 engine sure doesn't need anything to keep it hotter

I would say get a new one.

I have been wanting a new one for the 5er now too, but haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. I won't remove the old one until I get a replacement either.

Pretty sure it's there to help in the event of an engine fire (and not so much for sound deadening purposes) would replace it if it was me, hate it when they are missing on cars but that's my OCD talking.

What are you replacing the bonnet or just the material under the bonnet at that price :hammerhead:
