Unable to start

Hi, I have a E46 320D, I tried to start my car this morning but it would not take. It swings without making any noises, like click sounds or dragging. I tried jump starting it but it didn't help. I took out my battery and replaced it with another and still didn't work. I tried kick starting too, but that also failed. Please assist, if anyone knows what the problem could be.

Hi Chris, I'm in Cape Town - Kensington.

I kept having this issue after replacing the rubbers in my key. Spare key worked fine, seems like I didn't secure the rubber well enough when putting the key back together.

I agree that this could be it, but definitely try to get the codes read first if you can. If this points towards the fuel pump as well, then just check the relay for the pump also before replacing it. Could possibly save you a few bucks. Good luck bud.

Just send me a pm when u ready

Hi Chris, my car started. A mech looked at it and found that on my wiring there is a bad negative, so it could be the wire corroded.
Thanks for the offer to help.

good day friends i am new to this forum so please forgive me if I have posted in the wrong place. i have a 2001 e46 320d m47 prefacelift and it has a problem of not starting. it cranks fine but just wont start. I have run a diagnostic and it gives me 2 fault codes with communication to the injection pump. has anyone had the same or similar problem or if you could plz advice me as to what to look at next. any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hey bud

Welcome to the fanatics. You can maybe start a new thread on the topic, but in the meantime check the advice given above about listening if the lift pump is making any sound when you turn the key to position 2 (just before start), if not check the relay of pump.(in the glove compartment behind the fuses. Should be the third one from the left, but I'm not 100% sure. (Green in colour I think. Change it with one of a similar colour and listen for pump again.)

this model has no lift pump.. it still uses a high pressure fuel distributor pump, a Bosch vp44.this is different from the common rail engines high pressure pump, the vp44 also distributes and times the diesel injected, so the injectors are mechanical.
the fault codes you got points to the controller mounted on top of the pump being faulty, or the wiring going to the pump being faulty.. unfortunately it could also mean that the pump has mechanically failed, not uncommon on this specific pump. expensive to repair or replace , and definitively not diy unless you really know your stuff..

Apologies, my bad for making assumptions and not researching first. Thanks netercol for the correction. It seems I have been punished in the most ironic way possible, as I just went down to mine to take a drive, and the exact same thing happened. Cranking, but not starting. Now the battery is running too low to start the car after a few cranking attempts. I think something must be draining the battery, as it was working about two hours ago, but I have done some minor electrical work since then. Might have created a short by accident. I will try a jump start, if it doesn't take I'll start a new thread.

Good luck with yours, and once again apologies for my incorrect info.

@sandman , dont worry to much about it, this is one of the very few models that dont actually have a lift pump, easy mistake to make :=):

hope your own non starting issue does not cause you too many headaches..
