UFO - Unidentifed Fallen Object

Hi all,

I changed my Spark plugs this weekend and found a piece of metal in the 4th Chamber which prevented me from removing the 4th plug, after an hour of fishing with various objects i managed to fish it out. I was wondering if anyone can identify what this is?

I assume it was dropped in on the Last plug changed, probably stuck on a magnetic socket and left behind after tightening; I have no recourse as to when and where it would have occurred.

Pics are not clear, and i am not familiar with new gen bmw engines...

My brain tells me it may be from your valve train, looks to me like a retaining plate or clip of sorts, similar to a valve cotter or at least one half of it.

Ill be farked if i guess it right.

its tiny thing, about 8mmx5mm square with a slight curve edge and small bevel on the curve.

It could be a part picked up from the workbench with some tool, I doubt i'm missing it as my car doesn't seem to have any major issues.

from inside the coil maybe?

I did check the coil, look pretty sealed with only the plug contact point, Doubt its a coil part.

Is it plastic or metal?

I HIGHLY doubt it from the valve train, part don't usually come off in there without a bang.

It is probably nothing, personally I wouldn't worry about it. Chances are it is a broken clip or similar from a cover that was removed the last time someone had it open.

its Metal silver polished, looks like something mechanical, more curious than concerned. If I hazard a guess, some sort of shim or spacer.

the circular nature makes me think it is part of the coil attachment method to the spark plug head

Its part of the broken socket/spark plug wrench which the previous gorilla left there when they changed the spark plugs.

Having a second look, it could well be a tooth from a spark plug type tool..that broke and was left behind..
