Have got 235/45/17 on the front of my 530D and 255/40/17 at the rear. These are the original factory spec sizes on the sportpack 530.
Problem is that I can't find front and rears from the same manufacturer with the same tread pattern. Currently have Pirelli P-Zero's on the back, Yokahama A-Drive's on the front but the rears need replaced and Yokahama don't make a 255/40 in the A-Drive.

Have been advised to replace the rears with 245's, then I can get the same 4 tyres from a number of manufacturers. Does anyone forsee a problem with me dropping one size at the rear?

Reducing the width without the profile adjustment will change the rolling circumference and in turn the gearing to a slight extent. In this case, it ought to be marginally more responsive but it also mean that the drive will be a tad bit tighter which you won't feel in the beginning as the tyres are fresh with loads of thread.

There are loads of online tyre calculators to give you the correct closest fit.

I wouldn't "stretch" 245 rear tyres. The sidewall of the tyre should be flush with the rim. If it arcs the tyre will have much less life and your chances of a blowout are much higher.

Thanks for the advice all

Checked out a few of the links you guys posted and the Falken 255's seems like a well priced option. Anyone had any experience with these tyres??
