Tyre Size Change - Good Idea?

Hey guys/girls,

I have a (what seems like a stupid) question about tyre sizes. So my E87 still has its stock wheels on (205/55 R16 - front + rear). But my backside has been itching to change the wheels to make it look a bit sexier and I would like a broader tyre on the rear since that's where the driving wheels are. Now I've been looking at other Beemer's sizes and, ideally, I would like to change my wheels to:

Front: 225/45 R17
Rear: 255/40 R17

Besides the obvious fuel consumption issue, many people have told me that I can't really do that because the ABS/Traction will constantly complain because the size differences will be interpreted as the wheels spinning at different speeds thus activating it. Is there a way around this issue and/or are there any other recommendations out there that I could follow to avoid this specific issue?

I'm not an expert in this field so any and all advice in this regard will be much appreciated!

Going 225/45/17 in front will be fine.

I think 255/40/17 at the back might be wide.

I assume you referring to Style 194 from the E90.

If so, that rim is 8.5J but ET37 which means a 255 trye at the back might be too wide.

The 1 series went up my max 245 at the back if I recall correctly.

This is under correction:thumbs:

As far as I understand, as long as you have a similar rolling circumference you are ok. There are numerous tyre calculators on the interwebs which can help with that.

I know mine is a E85... but I went 275/30R18... (from a stock 245/40/R18)... and I love it!

Do it!

But what was the wheel offset ?
Cos in the style 261 from the 135i for example, it is ET52, which is a big difference from say ET35

Thanks so much for the info! Currently have Style 222's on, but I'm looking at a different set of mags (would love style 300's on her, but going completely different now) and don't want to end up buying the damn stuff and having issues later on.

So maybe I should cap them at 245's?

All depends on rim offsets and width.
