Tyre Options

Hi all

I have a E90 335i, without a sports pack and is still running on 17" wheels. I want to upgrade to 18" wheels and have not yet decided on which ones, but I am looking at the CSL reps

My questions:

1 Do I go narrow/wides?
2 What will the tyres sizes be for this upgrade not to affect the speedo to much?
3 RFT's or not, I am leaning towards non-RFT, not for $ sake but for ride quality and handling

Any suggestions would be appreciated:thumbs:

18" CSL reps look far less exciting IMHO.

I would jump to a 19" wheel. You have more than enough vooma to handle the increased rolling circumference.

RFT is 100% pure crap.

Oh, and your speedo with a bigger wheel will only correct it, so I don't understand the concern.

Personal preference but i would say an 18 upgrade isn't worth it,rather go 19's and definitely non rft's..

To answer your questions, most csl reps come in narrow and wide.Tyre sizes will depend on the size of the rim but generally 225/35 and 255/30 work for the 19's.Make sure the offset is correct to avoid rubbing and so on,its a real pain..

Thanks, not very educated in "offset", who can I chat to with regards to the technical details? Do I need spacers or something?

Thanks for the info sofar

Spacer will add to the offset and push the wheel further out. You don't want this unless you purchasing a wheel not meant for your car. Don't buy a wheel meant for an E46 cos that won't work.

An ET33 will be safe for your car with a 8.5J in the front and 9.5J on the rear

You're welcome to PM me if you need assitance

While all the suggestions above are valid, you also need to consider the type of roads you'll be using and your driving style.

For example 19's don't offer much protection on poor road surfaces. One bad pothole and there will be wheel damage.

Also, the choice to go staggered or same all around is based on a few other things: For example, you can get a wider tyre at the rear if you go staggered, but you can't rotate - hence, you will need to replace your rear tyres more often and sometimes 255+ tyres can get pricey. On the other hand, if you put the same all round (which means narrower at the rear, so that it fits in front), you ultimately sacrifice a bit of grip.

On the RFT, non-RFT issue, this is again personal choice. The trade-off is cheaper tyres and smoother ride vs added safely factor in the event of a puncture - your choice ... however, if you do ditch the runflats, try to get a spare wheel kit, if you can.

What are the tyre sizes for the OEM 18" motor sport wheels (narrows & wides) for the E90?

thanks

Don't always assume that an 18 is cheaper than a 19.

If it isn't a common size tyre in the market you will pay dearly.

The profile difference between an 18 & 19 wheel setup on that car isnt hugely different, since the width on the 19 is somewhat greater.

You need to remember that a 40 or 50 profile for instance isn't measured in mm which many many people get wrong. It's an aspect ratio, i.e. A percentage of the width.

Eg: A 225/35 for example will sit lower than a 285/30 by a long shot.

My money is still on the 19's but it's a long lasting decision that you'll need to make. Good Luck with the choice. :thumb:

If you buy 18", you will for the rest of your life think "shouldn't I have bought 19"".

Every-time you look at your car you'll think, "I wonder how it would have looked with 19""

As soon as you see another car with 19" you think "sh!t, that could have been me."

So if you are a masochist by nature, buy 18"

I agree 100%, if I go OEM E90 wheels it will be the 18", but if I go CSL reps, it will be 19"

You know, I have never considered myself as a procrastinator, but I think you are right, I am procrastinating around the rims and the JB4, once I get my car back next week from BMW, it's time ..............
