TV / DVD in your car... what does the law say!!

So I was reading up on all the new regualtions in the road traffic act, and came upon this. I remember ALLOT of fanatics asking about how to make their built in satnav show dvd's while driving, so here is what the law says...
PS: This goes for a DVD screen fitted in the back, that is visible to other road users as well. :thumb:

National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999
Chapter X : Rules of the road and matters relating thereto
Part I : Rules of the road
308B. Prohibition on use of television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles

1) No person may operate on a public road a motor vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operated while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part or portion of the image on the screen:

a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position; or

b) is likely to distract the driver or other road users;

2) The provisions of subregulation (1) do not apply to the driver if:

a) driving a bus and the visual display unit is, or displays, a destination sign or other bus sign;

b) the visual display unit is, or is part of, a driver's navigational or intelligent driving aid; or

c) driving a double deck bus having a TV monitor.

Do you think this law is just another way of collecting money of the wealthy?? Or a valid road safety law??

I think it has merit. I use to have dual screens for the rear passengers. And one day a taxi driver wanted to SEE what my kid was watching and stopped so close to my car that he bumped right into me. Fortunately, i had a tow bar, which left more damaged on the taxi bumper...nice.

Since then i have not installed TV screens in my cars again. :thumbs:

Twinz, personally I wont install it, because it allows me to still talk to my kids when driving somewhere, and also forces them to look around, and see stuff, and ask questions, especially on long trips like when we went to Uvongo.

Mine also cuts the image when you start moving, its very boring.

But imagine it didnt, the size of the accident would be spectacular.

Mobile phones are enough of a distraction, there is just no way to safely drive a car while enjoying the latest episode of Top gear..

How would you prevent an "officer" from peeking into your back window, notice your kid/s is watching a video on a tablet and fine you? Also, most video's are located on the headrest, which is clearly visible from outside.

I think the principle of the law is fine, in terms of driver distraction, but I fear this could turn into an alternate revenue generation scheme ...

Not arguing with your thread/post, just highlighting a concern.

I found the "crack" for my E38 740i and managed to make the TV available whilst the car is in motion, I tried to put it on a TV station, but soon got irritated by the continuous chanel drift and interference, as well as that it was actually unpleasant to try and watch TV and drive, and have never used again.

I don't really travel any great distances, and have thus not invested in the DVD option, and there are no "little-feet" (kids) so there is no need for it either in the future,

so its more of a gimmick, that is just about never used.

This new DSTV drifta, wont you be able to hook that up to the screen and watch tv like that??

I found the "crack" for my E38 740i and managed to make the TV available whilst the car is in motion.
so its more of a gimmick, that is just about never used.

I also got a crack for my E93 335i which makes DVD playable while car in motion....Other day the cops stopped me just to admire the car...even asked to me to floor it.:biglol::joy:

:thumbdo: This sucks, my daughter loves watching her movies in the car. Still dont see how it can be a problem if its a single screen mounted at the back she even puts the earphones in. No distraction for me. But thank you for the post Coisman!

Apparently the images are broadcasted differently and thus distorting the image if used on a device with a large screen, like a TV, sort of pixelated. Thats how it was explained to me!

remember riding next to a ml merc going down to durban ,the kids were watching finding memo,it was quite entertaining,but i think the guy got upset with me as i kept next to him.

so yes a danger to other road users.

and aggree the kids should look around and see the country.

I recently bought a 335i 2009 with CIC. Where did you get the crack from? I read up on dvdinmotion.com but it seems a bit steep from about three lines of code. Do you know of a place in JHB cracking this?
