I'm busy comparing a e39 and e91 touring and I see stats on paper that not what i would expect.
First the e39 has a smaller turning circle although it is longer

E39 touring: Min. turning circle dia.: BMW 528i 37.1 ft (11.3 m), BMW 540i 37.4 ft (11.4 m)

E91 touring : Smallest turning circle diam.: 38 ft 9 in/11.8 m

Then boot space:
e39 touring: 410/1525
e91 touring : 460/1385

Not everything went downhill, my car for instance is a 2004 model :)

The are a bunch of factors that can have an effect on the turning circle, on these things is the ratio of the length of the car to the wheel base, the larger the ratio the smaller the tuning circle will be:
E91
Length: 4526mm
Wheelbase: 2761mm
Ratio: 1.639261137

E39 touring
Length: 4806mm
Wheelbase: 2830mm
Ratio: 1.698233216

I must say, the E90 doesn't seem to have as small a turning circle as I would have initially thought - still many times better than our HMS Aysuzu! :)

Rear wheel drive frees up alot of space upfront for free moving steering. I suppose bigger cars have more space for steering gear. Theoretically the smallest turning radius would be the lenght of the car if you can get the wheels to turn 90 degrees:pimp:
