Hi, please can someone recommend a turbo recon joint or if you know of someone selling a turbo for a e60 530d I'd appreciate your help. My car seems to be smoking very heavy only when I'm idling in traffic or hit the reverse gear. The smoke smells of oil and its really heavy, I've been told that the turbo is on its way out.

It's quite embarrising

What's the mileage on your car and are you sure it's the turbo? However, if it is and you're going through the trouble of replacing it, you might as well do a downpipe (de-DPF) at the same time, as a clogged DPF is often one of the contributing factors for turbo failure. The turbos in the 3.0d are pretty decent and failure, while not impossible, is not common on these cars (compared to the 2.0d).

Have a read here for more info on downpipes: Diesel Downpipes. At no point am I suggesting you start modding your car for better performance - just ensuring that you take steps to protect your turbo in future

I'd also recommend someone like TuneTech to get a full diagnostics on the car, before getting the turbo replaced, as you don't want to replace a turbo again if you don't fix the root cause of the problem.

The truth is i need a good diesel mech, I'm not in JHB so it's very difficult to find a reputable mech in Durbs. although my vehicle is smoking quite heavily i have no loss in power.

I have recently had an issue with the exhaust manifold that i had welded, maybe i should try and replace the exhaust manifold and then see if the problem persists.

From what I understand it only smokes when in traffic at low speed or when reversing? Has anyone followed your car and noticed if it smokes at higher speeds or when accelerating hard? Also how much of oil is the car consuming? This could be a host of things really, so how about more information on the car, mileage, service history including breather replacement and condition of EGR? It could be anything from worn valve stem seals to a faulty turbo to oil bypassing into the combustion chamber..

Help us to help you..
