there has been much talk on the forum about massive dyno gains on the M engine,
Steve Dinan heads up the largest independant Bmw Tuning company in the world.
please read the White Paper below , as it details his findings on the Dyno gains .
i have repeatedly made comments with regards to tuners claiming big numbers , i have mentioned the tuning of the air temp senors as possible reasons for the gains.
there are a number of tuners around the world , that tune cars "on the dyno"
to take advantge of this "free dyno power"
take some time to read the article i am sure you will find it interesting
and please lets discuss this article and leave individual tuners out of this.

below is a link to their software tuning for the e46 m3.

they claim 5bhp max on a bone stock e46 m3
they also market different phases of sw based on the mods.
phase 2 would yield greater results once couples with an exhasut/decat.
as the ecu will need to reprogrammed to take advantage of the free flowing exhaust .
below is an article about chip tuning

he goes on to mention how finely tuned the m ecu is from the factory.
so it looks like sw alone will not gain u a "real" 25 -30bhp
things like decat , fuel and temps all play a role to ramp up the gains .
a car modified with hardware will not be optimised , it needs sw to optimise the new setup and will show greater gains than sw only
