Trip review

Fellow fanatics, I just returned from a round trip from Johannesburg to East London. Trip was done with my 2010 320d. I keep thinking why have I been driving anything else all these years

My entire trip cost me R1200 in diesel(air-con on all the way back) :clapper: averaged 4.8l/100km. Traveled at a constant 120km/h using cruise control. It has the economy but when i need to overtake i quickly realize that I am doing in excess of 180km/h.

I am definitely impressed!

Diesels are the best machines for long open roads. I however cannot keep to 120kph on those loooooong open stretches where you don't see another vehicle for 15 minutes :fencelook:

The road trip to EL is taxing even for an avid driver. Sticking to the required speed limit is even more taxing. I did that not so long ago, and i think i was on the road for well over 11 hours. The last home stretch from Kroonstad to Pretoria has never been so long before...

I generally do Pretoria to Mossel Bay in 11 hours, over a distance of 1260km. Including stops. I consider that good timing because the once it took me 13 hours with all the roadworks. I would say doing that distance over 12 hours including stops would be decent/average.

Haha totally with you bud.

I picked up my 2011 320d M Sport from SMG Durban a month ago.
I traded in my 120i M Sport so got to drive both cars , 1 to Durban and 1 from Durban to Johannesburg.
and honestly they are worlds apart, the Torque is addictive and it seems you always have the required power.

im definitely sold on Diesels after thinking I would never own one.

Once you go Diesel :cartel:

After selling my Passat TDI, I took over my wife's old car, Toyota Auris, not a bad car... but yes, it did not take me very long to :bin: it, so now, going back to the dark side.

Diesel is life, and is something no petrolhead will understand until experiencing it first hand.

Tack tick tick tick ......... ya I have experienced it in my friends e90 320d but have to be honest, screw the fuel thing as I love the note of that 6 pot when you dump your right foot and it just goes but where your asma pumps runs out of breath ours just goes on and on and on. ....... will not give it up. Unless I get the 330d and higher which in that case might change my mind. .....maybe not as I hate that tick tick noise and you dont know if it suppose to do that or the motor is knocking valves or something.

To OP, that is good fuel consumption, I did the road in my E46 330i and honestly it was the best as cruise control in that auto made the road short. 11 hours from PTA to CPT, 130km/h with some stops and plus that annoying roadworks where you sat for like 20 minutes.

I highly disagree here.

A 530d M57 with remap and a few mods does not run out of breath. At 140kph the rev counter was still below 2000 RPM, leaving plenty of space to still play. And it will get you there on half the amount of fuel.

Bring your 6 pot petrol and come, the only person who will be getting asma is the car behind from the diesel smoke :cartel:

Hey, before we attack the little guy. Read my post about where I start with Unless .....

You will see I am not referring to the 330d and up as seen in the defense response from the diesel fans :tiptoe: here.

I agree with the 30d and up, they have more torque than us and with a tune more power due to their asma (turbo) pumps.

But ok, please post a video of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th , 5th and 6th gear in peak rpm and speed. I would love to see that as we are talking about beating us petrol heads here.

Not fighting, just for interesting

But then why compare a 2.0d to a 3.0i? :=):

Completely different class of vehicles.

I know

That is actually the problem to be honest and something I have to give to the Diesel fans. If I knew what I know today I would have gone for the 330d and if that was out of my price range the 4 pot 320d as these cars have awesome low down torque (can carry all my buddies with ease without breaking a sweat) and the power is okish. But hands down to the diesels is what I say.

But the sound of this 3L is beyond describing, think that is what sold me plus if some moroon want to floor his car when I want to bypass.
