Hi guys

please assist me here, I need to top up my car with gearbox oil.
I have been recommended Top Tec ATF 1800.

The car model is
2008 BMW X5 e70 3.5d XDrive - 6 speed automatic gearbox

Is this the best Oil?
or what can you recommend ?

Contact ZF SA directly. Transmission oil on a newish car should not go low, unless you have a problem.

Here is some info from (4x4 forums) on an oil change with contact info. Not sure if prices still apply - you can contact them to confirm.

ZF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

ZF’s automatic transmissions are filled with specially developed synthetic oils.
At very high operating temperatures, the oil ages faster than under normal conditions.

Examples include:
· Frequent trips at high speeds.
· Frequent trips with a trailer in tow.
· Sporty driving

Depending on the driving style, ZF therefore recommends a transmission oil change every 80 000 to 120 000km or within 8 years. http://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/products/services/repair_service/repair-service.html

We provide a solution for vehicles that are out of warranty and/or out of a maintenance plan.

Examples of vehicles fitted with a ZF transmission include:
· Land Rover - Freelander (9speed), Evoque (9speed), Discovery 1 – 4, Range Rover
· Volkswagen - Amarok 6 speed manual and 8 speed auto (8HP45), Touareg T5
· Audi - Q5, Q7 and most of the sedan cars
· BMW - X1, X3, X5, X6 and most of the sedan cars

I fully agree with msm, contact ZF and let them do it for you. Car gearbox has to be at a certain temp when taking the oil level, etc., so let the experts do it for you. I had to tell the guys that did mine (not ZF) how to do it as they assumed it was full when the oil started coming out of the filler (car was cold). Was quite upset about it! So get the experts to work on your gearbox. Please! Btw., those prices are a bargain!

You should not mix the oils in the gearbox by topping up with anything else that is already in the box. The oil level should be measured when the oil is hot and the engine running.

Having said all that, do nothing else but take it directly to ZF, do not pass go and do not collect R200. ZF will check your gearbox and probably change the oil and filters using OEM parts and the proper ZF oil.

These gearboxes are very expensive and a clumsy DIY could cost serious money to fix.
