Hi buddy

Your car is in limp mode currently, most common causes could be the ABS module, at your milage the gearbox could also be the culprit

Full details of the car would help

If I'm not mistaken yours has the GM gearbox not ZF:thumbs:

Forum member P1000 will be able to assist you with advice here.

What you describe is exactly how these boxes fail. If you open it up, you will find the oil full of clutch material, the forward clutchpack completely gone and plates blue from the revving while in gear. You will also likely find the torque converter clutch is completely gone.

This means a complete rebuild, including a new oil pump and remanufactured torque converter and valve body.

Please note that not all gearbox shops that claim they can rebuild this box can do it, and most of the time, you won't be able to do another 10kkm on a cheap rebuild. It will cost you in the region of 25k+, if you get quoted less than 22k, they are skipping some components, and that will make the other new parts fail. (you simply cannot get the parts for much cheaper than that.)

I recommend you contact ZF, they sometimes do these GM boxes, otherwise I would take it to Sparklight gearboxes, who also offer a 2 year warranty. A recon gearbox from the stealer will be 60k+ ex vat (and it is exactly the same product you will get from one of the above two suppliers).

My box did this last week Tuesday! Your gearbox just said goodbye to you! (Mine had the EXACT same symptoms).

BMW Quoted me 85k including vat to replace it as they do not fix these boxes, only replace them.

The cheapest quote I got to have it reconditioned was 25K but the guy said probably more toward the 28k mark. all the other quotes I got were 28k Plus.

If I were you I wouldn't bother fixing it as it will break again in the future, this is not your fault, its BMW building a gearbox for a car that is too weak to handle the engine its built for! in my opinion BMW should have done a call back on this box.

Do yourself a favour and convert the car to a 6 speed manual, it works out a bit cheaper and at least you will have piece of mind too...

I will NEVER EVER buy a POS auto BMW again in my life, they are full of problems and the problems are always effing expensive to fix and its not just the diesels, My dad had a E39 528 and the autobox gave endless shit, I had a E30 BMW 323 and the autobox packed up, they never give any warnings, they just stop working, now my 330d same thing.

Manual FTMFW!

Also with a manual box, you can do software and never worry about your autobox giving in on you, you will never need to worry about driving your car gently all the time in case your box suddenly gives in. And most importantly you wont take a long drive somewhere and get stranded because the POS auto decided to pack up.

Sorry for my negative attitude but when these boxes go its not a very nice experience at all.

P1000 did warn me of this box and its issues!

How on earth can you say a car needs a callback if the gearbox lasted to almost 300kkm? The design life of the box is 200kkm... I do agree that there are other issues on the box that should have gotten a callback.

All modern auto boxes have a limited life, and you simply cannot expect them to last forever.

I do agree on the manual conversion, but 6 speed might be a bit of a challenge on the 5er, since it never same out of the factory with a 6 speed, so you would need to manufacture some parts.

May I ask some more details on your conversion, where are you having it done, how much is it costing, etc.

Well the fact that it lasted that long is a bloody miracle, If you drive the car gently all the time I guess it will last a long time.

My mech told me that he has seen these boxes last as little as 80kkm. with no mods done to the car and sees allot of them coming in at +-120kkm.

It isn't fair that you buy a 330d or 530d and have to drive it gently in fear of the box failing on you and the fact that it gives absolutely no warning is bloody madness, and very dangerous as it could leave you stuck in the middle of no where and what if your on your own and your cell is is dead then what?

A car with a manual box will quite happily drive up to 1000 000km with maybe a clutch change or two....and if your manual gearbox is about to expire on you it will give you some kind of warning, grating gears etc, whats more BMW tells you that the oil in the autobox is a life time oil lol....If oil companies could create an oil that lasts forever they would be out of business.

Gizmo is doing my 6 speed conversion for me

I guess if the op wants to do a manual conversion then 5 speed will be best if they never came out in a 6 speed from the factory.

Well, that is a problem with any auto box, really, the ZF 6speeds also have a bad track record.

On the matter of the oil - it will surely last as long as the box, by making a box that does not last long, they ensured it .

But on a serious note, the oil in this box should not degrade over time, and there is no contaminants in a gearbox that breaks down the oil. The soft material the valve body is made from is the real culprit in this gearbox - the oil should outlast most gearboxes.

Bottom line: if you want a gearbox that will last longer than the warranty, get a manual.
