My box did this last week Tuesday! Your gearbox just said goodbye to you! (Mine had the EXACT same symptoms).
BMW Quoted me 85k including vat to replace it as they do not fix these boxes, only replace them.
The cheapest quote I got to have it reconditioned was 25K but the guy said probably more toward the 28k mark. all the other quotes I got were 28k Plus.
If I were you I wouldn't bother fixing it as it will break again in the future, this is not your fault, its BMW building a gearbox for a car that is too weak to handle the engine its built for! in my opinion BMW should have done a call back on this box.
Do yourself a favour and convert the car to a 6 speed manual, it works out a bit cheaper and at least you will have piece of mind too...
I will NEVER EVER buy a POS auto BMW again in my life, they are full of problems and the problems are always effing expensive to fix and its not just the diesels, My dad had a E39 528 and the autobox gave endless shit, I had a E30 BMW 323 and the autobox packed up, they never give any warnings, they just stop working, now my 330d same thing.
Manual FTMFW!
Also with a manual box, you can do software and never worry about your autobox giving in on you, you will never need to worry about driving your car gently all the time in case your box suddenly gives in. And most importantly you wont take a long drive somewhere and get stranded because the POS auto decided to pack up.
Sorry for my negative attitude but when these boxes go its not a very nice experience at all.
P1000 did warn me of this box and its issues!
