Trade-in price of F30 320d only R110000

Hi all

I just need some advice here. Attached is the G20 offer.

I paid off my F30 320d sport line and now got offered a G20 320d M-sport for almost R780 000. The G20 looks really nice and the suspension feels like a dream however what shocked me is when they offered me only R110 000 on my current car as the sales agent said my car has very high mileage at almost 208 000km. Also he indicated to take out some chip marks and spraying the rims will be almost R8000.

I did hear that selling my car privately will be better however I am unsure if taking a new car will be worth it as I drive 30 000km a year. I also will need to pay R4000 to install 250 micron mirror tint, what I currently have on my F30, as this keeps the car quite cool. I really like the G20 but I don't know if I should wait a bit till the price reduces then try again or should I just keep my F30.

My F30 drive 100% fine no problems. Just a bit of wind noise at speed and the run flats are a bit noisier than the G20 that was much quiet. Also the G20 has got no paddle shifters that I have in my F30.

I want to pay the car over 72 months no balloon payment that’s my budget.

Thank you in advance.

These decisions are never easy.. The heart trumps logic each time.. The fact is your F30 does have high mileage, but it has not given you problems.. 72 months is a long time, not sure how you feel about brand new vs second hand but I can guarantee in 6 months to a year better deals will be had on the G20..

Also.. In 2012 I was one of the first to buy the F30 320d when it launched, that car was not well put together, lots of issues.. So lessons from my side I am not even thinking about getting a launch year G20 to be honest. I am waiting for a X or 5 series to get slightly closer to the G20 prices and will be considering that as a new daily. That is my plan for now, I was offered stupid money for my F30 335i, so I am keeping it.

That is my view and perspective as I said each person will feel differently.

Keep the 320d or sell privately... but bear in mind that even selling privately there is no shortage of lower mileage examples and it is not an M Sport which makes it worse.

Dealers really are sitting with a TON of F series stock (I know of guys with low-ish mile 320is offered under 200K) and now that the new model is out you will really take a hammering, particularly at that mileage.

A 320d well looked after can still serve as a daily for some time to come (IMHO) and you can still buy the newer model if you really want to. If you're already spending R780K (I would never personally pay this amount for something like this... but anyway) R100K won't make a massive dent in your instalment and R100K is nothing in the grand scheme of things vs. having a paid up reliable car that you have owned and looked after from new.

I would recommend you sell on consignment or privately, you can fetch a minimum of R60-R70k extra vs the price offered.

Difficult decisions. Problem with car prices though is they sky rocket,
In 2012, a new 320i was R380k more or less, that same car (after facelift) was approx ~R600k, buying early helps in that regard, but as someone warmed, it's test models, I expect the LCI to be much better.

All the best.

What is the best car?
A paid off car!

Keep the F30.

If you need to repair or maintain things in the next few years, I highly doubt it would cost you even a quarter of the debt you would need to incur to buy the new car.

Also, factor in that our economy is going down the toilet, so it would be smart to not incur huge debt on any big purchase.

Yes true it seems that my thinking of what an F30 might be worth and the real trade-in amount on offer will make only a small dent in the repayments.

:praise: yes yes I agree keeping the car will save me a bit of money. Maybe extending my current aftermarket plan for another 2 years will be a good idea instead of incurring extra cost...but damn that G20 looks and drives so good.

Thanks finatics, seems I just needed BMW thinking heads to talk to.

If only you drive the G20 and see the new electronics it looks and feel really good and that impulse just wants me to get the car. I'm definitely going to be bit jealous when a new car drives past me but financially it does make sense to keep the F30 a bit longer as it still drives without any mechanical issues. The only expense in the last 100 000 km on my F30 was new tyres and new shocks (as I drove those in it's chops in the Fish River Canyons in Namibia), excluding the normal oil services.

You wouldn't want to drive and use the new 320d like how you do in your current 320d. So you'd end up not getting full service or usage from it, making that monthly installment feel more expensive than it already is.

Keep your F30 mate and get a 2year warranty on it. The G20 demo will be more affordable in two years with all extras in it.

Keep the paid up car, it's a daily driver and seems to be giving minimal issues - if the tyres are harsh either look into non-RFT and get a spare or maybe get a new brand of RFT that has better reviews.

The fact of the matter is that you're not looking at the desirable versions of the new car, it will depreciate extremely rapidly over the next 2-3 years and you'll be left paying a shitload on monthly installments, rather save the dosh, keep the current car in good shape and then take things from there in a year or two when you have a good bit of capital saved up - not like your current car will depreciate a lot more, it's pretty much bottomed out.

Good luck man!!!

If you feel the F30 is a bit boring, may I recommend some cosmetic modifications to keep it looking young.

How about some stripes and black vinyls....

I would keep the f30 , but also looking at the quote, the dealer charges for on the road fees,as well as license and reg. They also charge for the wheels and trim that is included in the manufacturer flitted options, is that correct?I dont buy new so i don’t know these things.

As the others said.. dont get suckered in to "new and flashy". You have a paid off car. And they only want to give you R110k for it. Wait 2-3 years when you can get a low mileage G20 for cheaper, and you'll still be able to sell for F30 for R110k at least privately anyway.

Unfortunately that's the reality of trading in your car. Keep it for now. Besides I would wait for the new 3 to depreciate as it will before buying a good used one.

Totally agree with you. Going to extend my aftermarket motorplan in June again for the 3rd time and never had to use it because of the reliability of the F30.

Just gonna get jealous when a G20 owner drives past me.

Haven't thought of that as I'm not into that kind of thing. Maybe spray my rims black as the G20 I drove looked awesome with black rims. :smilebounce:

Damn I didn't even notice that as I was just looking at the full amount. It's almost R100k for the manufacturer fitted options but there's another manufacturer fitted options totaling R123k :dunnoanymore:

All I queried on was the R4000 dealer fitted accessories as they didn't fit anything extra on the car.

I feel more now to just keep my car and wait for a few years then just save up for a big deposit on a G20. Thanks man, really thank you for your help.

If your mind is set on changing, why not look at a model that will not depreciate as fast?
For around half the cost of your G20 quotation (around R400k), you can get a 2016 F30 330d, which is significantly better than the 320d you have, yet affordable, and which will not depreciate as fast. Then, if you can afford the installments, R800k will get you into a in a slightly used 2017 RS3 sedan, which I guarantee will not depreciate as the 320d will. Keeping it in house, I saw a low mileage ( under 30k) F30 M3 competition sport the other day for R780k, which will also depreciate less than the 320d. Except for the fuel savings, both cars will perform and drive way better than the 320d. Yep, maybe not the greatest choice as daily drivers (but why not!!). There are several good BMW X3/4/5/6 models up to that mark, with at least 3 years of plan left, which can serve as daily drivers. Ultimately, there are so many better choices at the R800k mark - driving one of these would make the G20 owners jealous when they drive past you!

Considering the guy seems to do an actual truck load of mileage every year. I don't think the likes of an S3 or M3 are the way to go. They'll depreciate faster than a torpedoed ship with hectic mileage on them.

330d would be the way to go if you really do wanna buy something different. But by all accounts your 320d is looking after you. Don't sell it. I have massive regrets selling my E60 530d 2 years ago. It was paid off, also had like 235k on it but there really was nothing wrong with it at all. But I got a bee in my bonnet for something newer/different. Now I sit with car payments and a car I don't enjoy as much.

Keep the paid up car. It's the best way to go!

Great advise, Wonder what this lemon not worth mentioning is per your signature.

I guess we all go through that awful "school class", I have a car that I spent over R120k on it, the best offers I received is R65k, solid ones of R60k.

Percentage wise it's a hefty loss. But sometimes one has to bite the bullet and move on.

I should update that and maybe post a thread for shits and giggles. Car in question is a 2008 E320 CDI.
