TPMS

Where do you get replacement TPMS sensors for an additional set of rims?

BMW doesnt measure pressure with the use of internal wheel sensors. They use other readings to determine pressure loss. I've seen a number of threads on the web where people debate about where or what determines it exactly.

Nevertheless, you can run another wheel on the car with no issue.

ok great!

but what is the use for these then?

TPMS Sensors

Hmmm, good question. Looks like the later models have changed. I stripped my E90 wheel and there was nothing in it, which got me to search for answers, hence the response I provided.

For which car is this?

There are two different types of TPM on the e90...

1.) the newer more advanced version uses a 433MHz RF transponder in each wheel that measures the pressure real time and relays it to a control unit, if the pressure drops the warning comes on
2.) the older version is more simple it basically compares the wheel speed an acceleration of each wheel and if one suddenly decreases (flat tire=smaller radius) and stays that way then the indicator comes on

1.) this is actually called TPMS
2.) called TDI tire defect indicator

if you fit other wheels with system 1.) the control unit may register a fault because of the missing sensor but im not sure with system 2.) the system will work the same as with runflats but maybe not as well due to the added flexbility of the sidewalls.

I would just buy some OEM ones online ... or try a scrapyard but it may be a problem, also im not sure how the frequencies are coded, you need to do some research, maybe they are universal.
