to mod or sell?

hey guys, my lil 328i jus hit 300 000kms... but we opened her up about 1000kms before and the bores are still fine, and i did the rings / bearings... the head is in perfect condition.... im not sure whether to mod her (keep it NA) or sell her?

86mm M3 pistons, M50 manifold, dastek chip, up the compresion, branch , freeflow, BMC filter and a 3.46 diff!
And you will have a low 14s car producing just shy of 160kw

Mod it if you have the cash, if cash is low keep it standard and enjoy the car. At 300000km you will get close to nothing for the car.

Cost and heart ache involved in replacing is usually not worth it. Unless there is something wrong with it. Likes like a sweet ride:thumbsup:

:bs: LOL.. I just cant leave something stock when i know the true potential! I.M.O we just better the car where the factory sliped up to cut cost! look at a stock head, full of casting marks and edges and ports doest even match! stock exhaust manifolds is the dead stop of any car, all the cyl has to fight each other to get the gasses out now we do all funny things like filters etc to get more air in but now we cant get it out as fast ''Pissing in wind'' ! by just doing a branch you will allow your car to suck more air as well! the amout of air that goes through the engine is directly conected to how much power the engine can make!

325i e36 pistons R5500 per set at spares shop in East london , viper branch and 50 mm pipes R6000 :slap:
Go for it , you only live once and you may learn something ( you do not like tinned bake beans !! ) along the way .

300000 is not a problem aslong as its been looked after. At that km I would be more concerned about a tired interior.

Too all the guys pushing for engine mods... it that a good idea on a 300000km car?

Mods depend on how much $$$ you want to spend,
how much POWA you want &
what you want to use the car for...

imho - order and priority of 328i mods (from cost perspective).

Do a couple of dynomometer tests before and after to see effect.

1. Debaffle airbox (R0) with fresh filter(R150), or BMC/K&N (R700) x 2

2. Freeflow (R4000 for SS), Use cheaper/lighter mild steel (R2000)..! 50/57mm..?
Can also use single 63 or 76 mm pipe

3. M50 intake(R1000),

4. Branches(R2000), I can help with TNT ones here. 50/57mm..? (See 2)

5. BBTB(R1000),

6. Software from Chiptuning or Unichip (R4000/R3000)

7. LSD ratio - depends on driving wheel sizes and application (R3000)


-> will give you a car just shy of M3..!

Turbo/ Engine mods have reliablity issues but are the only option(s) left if you still want more POWA

go with what raybimmer said viper branch, chip and air filter first... go with the basic mods first then once your tired of N/A give her some BOOST

300 000km's is nothing... bmw's were built to last forever , one of my friends sold his e36 at 500 000km's and the engine was not touched. the car is still running today , so dont stress too much about your mileage

I agree with Lunatik. Disregard the mileage. A car that has 100k on the clock can be worse off that yours with 300k, all depends on servicing the way it was driven, etc.

Plus rather trust the devil you know, then the one you dont!

As for modding a high mileage motor, since you will be chopping and changind a well looked after motor, you should be good.

What you SHOULD however look at is wear items like the suspension, brakes and maybe the gearbox. :thumbsup: Happy modding!

Bud add a poll to this thread to help you make up your mind!
If i was you, and i could afford another daily driver i would stip the E36 and make it a 12 month project!
Then you put back the basics, change the wear and tear parts and do some mods! then you dedicate that as your toy and keep it for a sunday illegal drags and track car!

Size of exhaust pipes needed 50 or 57 mm ?
Powerflow EL qouted me R6000 for viper branch , two boxes and 50 mm ss pipes , std pipes are 50 mm so why not go to 57 mm ?
(325i and 328i use same viper branch , no tnt available here !! )
Savspeed quote R65000 for 328i turbo conversion , motor is opened , new pistons etc , power is awsome .
Will car still be used as daily driver , would follow Pedrie's advice if possible .
Mods to N/A motor like higher compression are not suitable for turbo so may not be usefull .

thanks guys, and i think that iv decided to keep the car and mod her slowly. if i do ewverything at once i wouldnt enjoy the little power after adding each new "mod" so yeah, take it slow. the car is really neat, no accident damage and the body is clean and straight. the interior does have some signs of wear and tear, but then again its a 15 year old car. and a turbo conversion is R6500???

no no turbo conversion is around 25k
