I have a 2005 320d sportpack which i purchased new way back.. i now am faced with the decision to sell it as i am running the last year of my motorplan extension [and a few other reasons]. she has 85000 on the clock and has been serviced by BMW helderberg from day1. now what scares me is that if i didnt have a motorplan i would have spent about 60000 rand on her so far. Having clutch replaced as i complained of a shudder during pull off, having various electrical systems replaced and things like shocks bushes etc. If i go over the 100000 km mark and decide to keep the car and have it serviced at a local garage that does service Bmw specifically, can i expect any more big bills like the ones in the past or are things generally cheaper to have done at the local garage ? i have been told to watch for things like the turbo failing. What would something like that cost roughly to replace at a normal workshop. i remember my father inlaw saying his 330 d turbo cost in the region of 50 000 rand under his motorplan. I have also seen 320d turbos for sale on gumtree for about 5000 rand. Do i sell the car i love or keep it and use it. also what is a car like this worth ? i cannot get any sort of idea as i cant find any for sale. the car is in mint condition and has new tyres. pls any info would be greatly appreciated.

you can expect to pay half or less what the dealer charged you for the same work...

ive seen that the turbo costs about 9k which is a bit cheaper than the 50k dealer price

hopefully the diesel folk will pop is and help with your decision... if it were me i would keep the car...

Apparently, it uses a Mitsubishi turbo, for which parts are difficult to source, because BMW buys most of the parts for repairs... (they usually just fit recon turbos when they replace). But the turbo alone should be R10-20k, depending on where you can get it, but most likely you could find it for less than R10k new.

All in all, it really depends on how you treated the car so far, but if you are scared, get another extension on the motorplan...

My 530d has 280kkm+ on the original turbo.

I go through something similar thing ever few years should I or shouldn't I

Well i just did I have a 323i e90 which is almost out of motorplan extending it is about 25k with km's and time and that is only for a year but I always think to myself what do i do then. I got a deal to buy a new 320d from a dealer and they gave me 60k Tradein assistance so maybe look at this it works out cheaper that buying a demo.

If you are still paying for the car then I think of getting another one rather. If its paid off you will not spend more on maintenence than you current payments even if you go to a BMW dealer for servicing.

I have a friend that has a 97 320i e46 he has done over 400000km and he takes it to BMW for a service yes he does pay 5k for most of his services but he saves the payment he would of done on his car every month to cover that and it more than does.

Another option is to keep the car and sign a maintenance contract with hallard they have a product that you pay monthly for and they cover a percentage of the repairs and services in some cases the whole repair go to there web site and read about it. my Bro has it on his Alfa GT turbo Diesel and he has saved lots of money. And you know how Alfas are on breaking down.[/b]

2005 320D. Please forgive me for what could be a daft question, but would this be the e90 or the e46? cos the cost of repairs may differ substantially based on the model.
